Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Tuesday, May 7, 2024

Northfield Park has a 15-race card, and the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track. Race 11 (9:40 PM EST) 1-Cuzberttoldmeso (6/5)-Comes off a gate to wire win for the Rhoades-Merriman connection and comes right back versus the same kind. Draws the rail in the 2nd start off a claim and there is no reason to overthink this one. 3-Marriageontherocks (3-1)-Drops and makes the 2nd start on Lasix and that is often an angle to watch. Does have enough gate speed to land on the point or in the 2-hole and either could work for a win. Race 12 (10:02 PM EST) 2-Kawabunga (3-1)-Billy Davis Jr should work a cozy trip with this post draw. Has enough gate speed to get on the point and control the mile. Could be a soft quarter away from a picture. 3-Some Happy Pacer (12-1)-Taking a swing for a price and thinking the Miller trainee wakes up tonight with an inside post draw. Luke Ebersole is back for his 2nd consecutive drive and will look for an aggressive steer. Race 13 (10:24 PM EST) 4-Disgruntled Carl (5/2)-Winner of 4 straight has made it looks easy and destroyed the last 2 fields. This is only the 2nd morning line choice and looks like a must use as connections try to snag a larger purse. 6-Mounds For All (4-1)-The McGinnis pupil should have enough speed to get the job done. The question is the trip because gate speed isn't really its thing. AMac could have this one geared up before the last turn and hopefully the week off will help the cause. Race 14 (10:46 PM EST) 1-Virgins Beach Boy (2-1)-Benefitted from a typical sharp steer from Aaron Merriman. But the effort to pick up the win shouldn't be discounted. Worked hard off the gate, landed behind the 6/5 choice who collapsed down the lane and then stood tall to the wire. It appears a double up opportunity is well within reach and comes right back in sequence this time. 3-One Crazy Guy (5-1)-Will toss the last race from post 9 and hope the morning line price holds up. Davis Jr has gate speed to use, and the 4-year-old could land on the point or in the pocket behind #1. Either trip makes the Kreiser trainee an upset possibility. $1.00 Late Pick 4 1,3/2,3/4,6/1,3 Total Bet=$16 Check me out on Twitter!

Meet the Contenders: Gulfstream's Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies & Juvenile | Saturday, May 11, 2024

Automatic bids to Royal Ascot will be on the line Saturday at Gulfstream Park with a pair of two-year-old turf stakes bearing international implications. The five-furlong sprints each carry $120,000 purses and boast capacity fields of 12. Let’s meet the contenders for the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies (Race 8): #1-CHINA BLUE: Outrun fifth of 6 at Gulfstream May 2 and would be wheeling back on 9 days’ rest for trainer Javier Gonzalez. Last year’s runners in this race who had a Gulfstream prior outing finished fourth, eighth and ninth. #2-KIP THE DISTANCE: Close-up second in debut dirt sprint at Gulfstream 9 days ago when finishing 6 lengths in front of return rival China Blue. Sent off at nearly 22-1 at first asking for trainer Angel Rodriguez. Last year’s runners in this race who had a Gulfstream prior outing finished fourth, eighth and ninth. #3-BUNRATTY MANOR: Trainer George Weaver (pictured above) swept last year’s Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile in the inaugural year for the event. Son of No Nay Never, who sired last year’s Royal Palm Juvenile winner No Nay Mets. Pair of turf works at Palm Beach Downs among the morning prep work for Saturday’s first outing. Sold for $195,000 at Goff’s yearling sale. #4-YOU NEED ME: Rookie colt is by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s less-accomplished full-brother St. Patrick’s Day. Sold for $50,000 at Ocala in March and debuts off a series of dirt works for trainer J. David Braddy. #5-BULLET: Trainer Mark Casse was third in this race last year with The Myth. Brings this $425,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale buy to her debut off a long series of works at Casse farm and Palm Meadows. War Front colt is a maternal grandson of Surfside and great-grandson of Flanders, providing optimism for superior 2-year-old performances. #6-RAMSEY POND: Owner Ken Ramsey’s sharp-working debut runner by Divisidero drew $100,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and jockey Samy Camacho have strong 8-17 mark in tandem in recent years. #7-THE QUEENS M G: 45-1 upset winner of her Keeneland dirt debut from tough post 11 was privately purchased and transferred to Saffie Joseph Jr.’s barn after that race. Last year’s winner Crimson Advocate was coming off a debut third on dirt at Keeneland. Has turf in her damside pedigree as her fourth dam Parade Green won the 1997 Mrs. Revere and 1998 Joe Namath (latter at Gulfstream) on turf. #8-BOIS BLANC: Keeneland turf sprint debut runner-up at 24-1 odds was clearly second-best in that 11-runner lineup. Expect some early developers by sire First Samurai. Trainer Justin Wojczynski had a productive Keeneland meet with limited starters, just as his overall 2024 stats indicate. #9-PERFECT SHANCES: Led every step in her lone start, a Keeneland dirt dash that clocked fifth-fastest of 9 two-year-old races at the 2024 Spring Meet. Trainer Wesley Ward finished second in this race last year with Ocean Mermaid, bet to 4-5 favoritism in her career debut. Last year’s winner Crimson Advocate was coming off a debut third on dirt at Keeneland. By dirt sprint star Shancelot, but her dam is full-sister to Sweet Harmony, who opened her career 2-2 including Monmouth’s Colleen Stakes turf sprinting. #10-GOOD LONG CRY: Rookie enters on a modest string of 3-furlong drills on turf and dirt. Trainer George Weaver swept last year’s Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile in the inaugural year for the event. Sire Long On Value opened his career 3-3, earned more than $1 million and was a Grade 1-winning turf sprinter. #11-MY EMMY: Trainer Mark Casse was third in this race last year with The Myth and notably campaigned this filly’s sire War of Will to 2019 Preakness glory and eventually Grade 1-winning turf credentials. Trio of published workouts at Palm Meadows includes a pair of half-miles on turf. #12-UNCHAINED ELAINE: Clear-cut runner-up in her April 12 Gulfstream dirt sprint debut. Daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who, at stud, has had his most success with turf fillies. Trainer Patrick Biancone, who trained the dam Razorback Lady to success sprinting on dirt and turf, turns to jockey Keith Asmussen, fresh off the conclusion of the Oaklawn Park meeting. Last year’s runners in this race who had a Gulfstream prior outing finished fourth, eighth and ninth. // Let’s meet the contenders for the Royal Palm Juvenile (Race 10): #1-MAKEIT TO CHEYENNE: From the female family of elite sprinter Munnings, this son of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map debuts for trainer Mark Casse. Series of workouts at Palm Meadows includes one on turf and a bullet on dirt May 4. #2-ENTERDADRAGON: $17,000 purchase by Outwork debuts off a series of 7 workouts at Palm Meadows, the most recent of which came on turf. Outwork sired last year’s brilliant early season 2-year-old filly Brightwork, winner of the Debutante, Adirondack and Spinaway Stakes. Jose D’Angelo trains the direct descendent of the legendary mare Personal Ensign, his fourth dam. #3-MADROC: Constitution colt chased and tired to be fifth in his Keeneland turf debut April 25, finishing behind Royal Palm Juvenile rival Bright Skittle. Ocala-based colt returns to Florida for trainer Mary Lightner. Dam Holly Hundy was a Colonial Downs turf sprint stakes winner. #4-CLASSY WAR: Trainer Mark Casse notably campaigned this colt’s sire War of Will to 2019 Preakness glory and eventually Grade 1-winning turf credentials. Boasts bullet drills on turf not once, but twice, at Palm Meadows for the debut, notable this time of year when working amongst older horses. #5-REACH FOR THE ROSE: Home-bred debuts for owner Ken Ramsey and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. By Holy Bull-Florida Derby winner Audible and whose second dam was a juvenile turf stakes winner for the Ramseys. Solid turf work coming into this capped a string of 6 clocked morning moves. #6-I KNOW I KNOW: Long, strong series of 8 workouts for the debut, including a bullet on turf at Palm Meadows on Sunday. Trainer Patrick Biancone tabs Keith Asmussen to ride, fresh off the Oaklawn meeting that closed last weekend. Sire Jess’s Dream, the impeccable son of Curlin-Rachel Alexandra, won his 1 and only start before going to stud. His best success at stud has been with turfer My Dani Girl. #7-GABALDON: $9,000 purchase by Gone Astray debuts after 7 Palm Meadows published workouts for Jose D’Angelo. Solid turf move April 26 among those. D’Angelo teams with Emisael Jaramillo, winning at a 20% rate in tandem over the past year-plus. #8-RAISE THE BAR: Cruised to victory in his lone start, a Keeneland dirt dash that clocked second-fastest of 9 two-year-old races at the 2024 Spring Meet. Trainer Wesley Ward finished seventh in this race last year with 4-5 favorite and debut runner Holding the Line. Ward has trained 2 other offspring of this mare, both of which found the winner’s circle in their first or second start. #9-BRIGHT SKITTLE: Late-running debut third on turf at Keeneland on April 25, finishing 1 length in front of Royal Palm Juvenile rival Madroc after a troubled break. $142,000 pricetag on this son of Twirling Candy and the debut-winning mare Harbor Lights (her first foal to race). Trainer Rusty Arnold has had many top turf sprinters in his care, including Leinster and Gear Jockey. #10-GOVERNOR SAM: Trainer George Weaver swept last year’s Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile in the inaugural year for the event, winning this race with debut runner No Nay Mets. This rookie sold for $275,000 at Ocala in April and is from the first crop of $2.7 million earner Improbable. Grandsire City Zip long known for turf sprint success at stud. Bullet workout on dirt at Palm Beach Downs April 25 among 2 published drills. Dam I’m Betty G was a multiple stakes winner on turf. #11-INCANTO: Stonestreet Stable looks to continue its annual treks to Royal Ascot with this Irish-bred rookie who is working bullets. Jack Sisterson trains, while much of the Stonestreet-to-Ascot history came with Wesley Ward. Sire Mehmas best known to US players for exported offspring Going Global and Chez Pierre. #12-GARDEN OF WAR: Like Classy War in this same field, trainer Mark Casse notably campaigned this colt’s sire War of Will to 2019 Preakness glory and eventually Grade 1-winning turf credentials. Back-to-back bullet workouts at Palm Meadows on dirt and turf coming into the career debut. Casse turns here to jockey Miguel Vasquez, a 21% winning combination over the past year-plus.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis | Monday, May 6, 2024

Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track. Race 7 (9:00 PM EST) 2-Great Somewhere (5-1)-Paul Stafford trainee gets some needed class relief and lands at the same level of its last win coming back on 2-28. Joe B should get a close-up seat when the wings fold and be in the mix at the wire. 3-Bugaboo Lou (8/5)-Likes to go gate to wire and could do so as was the case in its last start on 4-23. This will be 2nd time for Lasix, steps-up but should have the ability to down this bunch. 5-Ocean Ridge N (5/2)-The 10-year-old workhorse had 17 wins in 44 races last year but at Yonkers is just 2-11 lifetime. Tonight, lands in a spot to extend that total. Should be heard from unless there is a battle early on with #3 for the lead. Race 8 (9:20 PM EST) 3-Hemsworth N (7/2)-Got a very good steer by Scott Zeron in last as he pushed the button at the right time and took control. It was an impressive effort, now Jordan Stratton takes over for Zeron and he could follow a similar plan. 4-Captivate Hanover (4-1)-In the last 43 starts this veteran has won 15 times. Moved up to this level and had no shot off the trip he got. Will give him another chance and the price should be right to take a swing. Race 9 (9:40 PM EST) 4-YS Do It Right 5-1-The Stratton brothers could have this one ready to deliver in the first start after a claim. Won 2 back at this level and has been competitive with a decent post. Will look to fade the 9/5 choice #2, Motive Hanover as his form seems to have fallen off and will probably still be bet hard. 5-My Ultimate Byron 7/2-Was claimed by the Dilloian barn for $30k off a win. Was pushed up in class and found the water too deep versus the $40k claimers. This barn is ice cold, but Byron is in a good spot to cash the top check and Matt Kakaley takes a seat. Race 10 (10:00 PM EST) 4-Real Willey (5/2)-Willey was caught at the wire after drawing off by 6 lengths. He might have been a handful to rate last week. But if he gets the top this time my take is Joe B won't let him burn every drop of gas. 5-San Domino A (6-1)-Raced well in the last 2 at this level and then was claimed by the Herrera barn. Found the $50k claimers tough and now drops down to face the $40's. Will look for a big try as Mark MacDonald gets the call tonight. $1.00 Late Pick 4 2,3,5/3,4/4,5/4,5 Total Bet=$24 Check me out on Twitter!

Jeff Siegel: What You Need to Know - Santa Anita | Sunday, May 5, 2024

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6. * The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing. * * Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play. View Jeff Siegel’s Prime Plays Video ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+ Main Ticket: 1-Marsh Creek Backups/savers: 5-Highly Desirable; 7-Abitmischievous. Forecast: Marsh Creek has done some very good work leading up to his racing debut, though it can’t be said he’s bred for grass. Nonetheless, here he is, in a turf sprint from the rail, in a field that really didn’t come up strong. If this grandson of the top class mare Indian Blessing can run, he can run, regardless of the surface, and with the barn’s “go-to” jockey J. Hernandez taking the call this sophomore son of Arrogate looks like a very live item. We suspect that if he breaks cleanly, he’ll be hard to beat. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: C+ Main Ticket: 4-Slew’s Joy; 5-Established. Backups/savers: none. Forecast: Slew’s Joy is a first-off-the-claim play for M. Glatt (24% with this angle) and also is making his first start as a gelding. Taken for $16,000 and returning for $10,000, the son of Slew’s Tiznow doesn’t have a healthy pattern, but on the barn switch alone probably deserves top billing in a weak affair. Established is comfortably drawn outside, drops to his lowest level ever, and is a three time winner over the local dirt track. Low percentage connections notwithstanding, the veteran gelding is the one to fear most. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 3: Post: 2:00 ET Grade: B- Main Ticket: 2-All That Glory; 7-Tees Touch (GB); 5-Cathal (Ire). Backups/savers: none. Forecast: All That Glory, a solid runner-up over this course and distance in a similar maiden grass dash for older horses, probably won’t have to improve much at all to graduate today. The T. Yakteen-trained colt just earned a career top speed figure that points him out as strictly the one to beat. A steady, strong work tab since raced is another plus. Tees Touch (GB) and Cathal (Ire) are Irish invaders making their U.S. debuts after displaying some promise during their juvenile campaigns. The former, a first time gelding trained by P. D’Amato, was 40-1 in his only start but ran quite well to be second before being privately purchased and imported. The latter, a good runner-up in a 14 runner affair while almost four lengths clear of the rest in a representative race at Dundalk in November, should be fit enough for J. Sadler to at least give a good account of himself. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 4: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: C+ Main Ticket: 2-Rhino Backups/savers: 6-Mystic Spirit. Forecast: Rhino is far from trustworthy but he’s back on dirt today and may appreciate the surface switch. Beaten as the favorite in both of his recent races following a layoff without no visible excuses, the son of Texas Ryano projects as the logical pacesetter and may be able to stay the course in a field lacking in late speed. Though a likely winner, he offers no value at 8/5 on the morning line. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 5: Post: 3:04 PT Grade: B Main Ticket: 4-Halfway Line (GB); 7-Mystification. Backups/savers: none. Forecast: Here’s a challenging turf miler for first level allowance older horses. Use as many as your budget allows. Halfway Line (GB) hasn’t been particularly impressive in his a.m. breezes since arriving from France, but he’s form overseas is pretty good, so if he brings his best stuff in his U. S. debut he should be very competitive. He gets Lasix and A. Fresu and figures to be doing his best work late. Mystification is lightly raced with room to improve and finished a solid third under these conditions last month after making the pace under pressure throughout. His only win as accomplished as the controlling speed, so we suspect that strategy will be employed again today. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 6: Post: 3:35 ET Grade: B+ Main Ticket: 5-Show Card; 1-Scary Fast Ride. Backups/savers: Forecast: Show Card looks like a short price in this first level allowance sprint. She’s drawn cozily outside, earned a career top speed figure in her recent maiden score, and likely will continue to improve as she gains added experience for B. Baffert. Scary Fast Ride returns to the main track after failing to negotiate the Hillside Course in her most recent outing. With two wins and a second in three career outings over the local main dirt track, the S. McCarthy-trained mare seems likely to return to her best form today. She’s not a particularly quick type leaving the gate, though, so she’ll have to avoid trouble from her rail draw. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 7: Post: 4:10 PT Grade: B+ Main Ticket: 3-Alluring Backups/savers: none. Forecast: Alluring had a tough beat in a similar Hillside sprint for sophomore fillies last month but we’re expecting the talented sprinter to break through today in this year’s edition of the Senorita S.-G3. She employs an effective second flight, stalking style, retains regular pilot U. Rispoli, and shows speed figures that are gradually rising. The R. Mandella-trained daughter of Ghostzapper is ready for a stakes win, and at 3-1 on the morning line offers a reasonable gamble and an attractive rolling exotic single. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 8: Post: 4:40 ET Grade: C+ Main ticket: Bag’s Gold; 5-Crowining Gold Backups/savers: none. Forecast: Bag’s Gold has lacked punch when it’s been needed the most in recent races, so we’re not sure he can be counted on but on pure form the Vronsky gelding should be able to handle this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 claiming assignment. His recent numbers have been solid, so we’ll put him on top but with trepidation. Crowning Gold is a strong fit at this level and is re-equipped with blinkers, so we’ll toss him in as well. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 9: Post: 5:10 PT Grade: B Main ticket: 7-Big Summer; 10-Just Nails. Backups/savers: 5-Excelia (Ire). Forecast: Big Summer usually prefers to finish second or third (10 times) rather than win (four times), but this is a field the veteran mare can beat with one of her better efforts if she’s ready in her comeback. The barn has been ice cold all year and its record with layoff runners is weak, so there are question marks. Still, the daughter of Mr. Big is a three time winner over the local turf course and her work tab should have her plenty fit. Just Nails shows the route-to-sprint angle that always catches the eye and a repeat of her race before last – she was beaten a nose at this distance over the flat course while earning a career top number – makes here strictly the one to beat. ______________________________________________________________________________ RACE 10: Post: 5:40 PT Grade: B Main ticket: 5-Lincoln Hawk (Ire) ; 9-City Exile (GB). Backups/savers: 6-Reckless Spirit.; 1-Barely Functional. Forecast: Lincoln Hawk (Ire) was badly victimized by the race shape (slow early, fast late) and could make no impression when unplaced in a similar spot over 10 furlongs last time out. This shortening to a mile should help produced more pace, so this Irish-bred gelding has a chance to improve big time at a good price (he’s 8-1 on the morning line). City Exile (GB), freshened since early February, likes to lag and then blast home and like our top pick can be dangerous if he can get some help up front.
