Flameaway: The top-tier contender for Canada’s Queen’s Plate will be a Kentucky Derby longshot, but not for lack of effort. Flameaway comes to play every time: rain or shine; turf, dirt or synthetic surfaces; even when drawn poorly in the starting gate. Flameaway has held his position in the final stretch call or improved the margin in 7 of 9 starts, and that’s important in the long stretch at Churchill. If he’s in the mix turning for home, Flameaway won’t back down easily and could stick around for part of the exotics. But trainer Mark Casse is 5: 0-0-0 in the Derby with horses who looked better or similar on paper.
