Each Monday, I’ll select my Most Valuable Pony from the previous week’s racing action around the country. Who won the week? It could be a breakout performer, a known stakes commodity or the horse lifting the most loot. Chime in on Twitter @Xpressbet with your thoughts on who should be each week’s MVP.
October 26-November 1, 2020
Owner: WinStar Farm and Blazing Meadows Farm
Trainer: Tim Hamm
Jockey: Gerardo Corrales
Performance: Constitution filly easily dispatched her rivals in the Oct. 31 $100,000 John W. Galbreath Stakes at Mahoning Valley. The 6-3/4 length victory was never in doubt as the 1-9 favorite ran her mark to 4-for-5 against fellow Ohio-breds. Her third of 9 in the Grade 3 Pocahontas at Churchill Downs behind Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies contender Girl Daddy underscores her talent on a broader scale.
On Tap: A return to Churchill Downs for the Grade 2 $200,000 Golden Rod on November 28 fits nicely on the calendar and on talent. She could be a top Florida filly over the winter on the Oaks path if she continues her development.
Honorable Mentions: The Chad Brown-trained Ingrassia nosed out stablemate Fluffy Socks to win Belmont Park’s Nov. 1 $80,000 Chelsea Flower on turf. At Woodbine, Dreaming of Drew stretched out nicely to 1-1/16 miles on synthetic with a 3-3/4 length victory in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Trainer Bret Calhoun’s Game Day Play rebounded from a defeat as the beaten favorite in the Kip Deville Stakes to win Remington Park’s Oct. 30 Clever Trevor Stakes for 2-year-olds, a key prep to the Dec. 18 rescheduled $200,000 Springboard Mile. And at Golden Gate, Baja Sur improved to 2-for-2 on the local Tapeta in winning the Nov. 1 $75,000 El Dorado Shooter Stakes, adding to last year’s Oakland Handicap.
