Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis | Friday, February 25, 2022

Last week’s $27,477 Stronach 5 payout was just a handful of dollars short of the weekly average since January 21. This week’s sequence could prove equally difficult, and then some, with five races covering four tracks nationwide in 90 minutes. It only costs $1 to play. Here's an early look at the action, with an update to follow Friday after scratches:

LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 8, 3:54 EST) -- In a field of unproven maidens at the 7F distance, KOBE’S GIRL gets a slight nod after she circled the turn 4-wide into decent fractions for that day, drifted to the 6-path in the stretch and ran second at 6F. BELLIFY worked forwardly for her debut for a low-profile barn, disappointed at 9-2 odds and could awaken at an inflated price. HELIACAL RISING improved with Lasix for Gonzalez and willingly chased a contested pace against $25,000 maiden claimers before fading in mid-stretch.

LEG B: (Gulfstream Park, race 8, 4:11 EST) -- Eight entrants make their 4-year-old seasonal debut, five won at different turf venues, two are maiden special weight winners on the main track. It adds up to an “ALL” punch.

LEG C: (Santa Anita, race 3, 4:37 EST) -- TAYET saved ground and raced in tandem most of the way with the 1-to-2 winner. She was in tight in the stretch and finished gamely between rivals after two months away, earning today’s ‘solo’ status.

LEG D: (Golden Gate, race 3, 4:53 EST) -- SMOKINHOTREDHEAD, unhurried and outrun until midway on the final turn, closed with a furious wide rush but couldn’t reach the odds-on winner in her three-peat attempt at this distance. MANGOTANGO saved ground until the stretch, split rivals with a well-timed bid and won at a proven distance on short rest.

LEG E: (Gulfstream Park, race 10, 5:13 EST) -- AUSSIE PRIDE, a $4.1 million sales buy, followed the 4-wide move of the winner on the final turn and was gobbling up ground late in a promising 1-1/16-mile turf debut. WHERE’S VAL (20-1) debuts off a long series of works for a 26-percent barn with MSW types and her dam was a turf stakes winner and $400k earner.
