The Americans
Keeneland stakes winner Slipstream gets the Americans back in the starting gate after a Thursday absence, taking her place in the stalls for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (Race 2). She’s being offered around 16-1 as a longshot chance with the British bookmakers. A pair of decorated 3-year-old American fillies in Pizza Bianca, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, and Spenderella, unbeaten in 3 races (including stakes wins at Gulfstream and Keeneland), take part in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes (Race 4) over a mile. They are 16-1 and 11-1, respectively, among international bookmakers. Friday’s final domestic entrant is Ruthin in the Holyroodhouse Stakes (Race 7), trying to get Wesley Ward back into the Royal Ascot winner’s circle after a frustrating start to the week. Ruthin was third at Royal Ascot last year and exits a victory in stakes company at Keeneland. She’s co-third choice in the UK books with several others at 12-1.
The Main Event
Inspiral is solidly favored at 3-1 in the UK books to take the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, today’s one-mile feature. The John and Thady Gosden trainee won all 4 starts last year and makes her sophomore return under Frankie Dettori. She won Group 1 and Group 2 stakes at the Coronation’s distance while a juvenile. Gosden last won the Coronation in 2012, while Dettori scored it in 2020. Cachet figures prominently from the start. She wired the Group 1 1000 Guineas in May and narrowly missed against France’s top 3-year-old filly milers last out. The US contingent is among the strongest of the week in this race. Breeders’ Cup champ Pizza Bianca got back on the winning beam at Pimlico last out in an easy tune-up for Christophe Clement. Meanwhile, Spenderella has looked the best in the 3-year-old filly turf division domestically after wins in the Hercomesthebride at Gulfstream and Appalachian at Keeneland for trainer Graham Motion. Her front-running style could challenge Cachet early.
