The headliner at Northfield Park goes in Race 10, the Carl Milstein Invitational for 3-year-old pacers with a $300,000 purse. The feature backstops an All-Stakes $1.00 Pick 5 that starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 6
1-Chulo (5/2)-Has been battling top of the class 3-year-old colts out East and fits much better here. Should be a player if minds manners.
4-Longshot (4-1)-Raced well in last coming 3rd to the 2 morning line chalks (1-3) in the next race. Can win by getting on the engine or coming off cover. Like the one above, figures to be in the hunt if stays flat.
Race 7
3-Guido Di (5/2)-Come off a nice try from post 7 at ScD to get a 2nd place check versus Caviar Gold. Has won 1 out of 4 here and has hit the board in every start. Could finally get some revenge with this post draw edge.
8-Caviar Gold (7/2)-Started the year off well, hit a bit of a dull patch and now appears to be on a nice roll again. This Beaver trainee has won 8 of 16 lifetime starts and some may fade this 3-year-old because of the post draw. But Merriman knows how to work a good trip from a bad post at Nfld and should be right there at the wire.
Race 8
5-Refined (7/2)-Not saying this is an easy spot but after battling the likes of Atlanta and When Doves Cry this is not that type of competition. Does well on the 5/8' at ScD and is 0-3 here, but that could change this evening.
7-Herculisa (4-1)-This mare is 5 for 5 at Nfld and gets Brett Miller back between the pipes. Can leave in a hurry but doesn't need to have the lead turning for the wire to take a picture.
Race 9
5-Ocean Rock (9/5)-Faded in last starting from post 7 after being off about 3 weeks. The game plan will be the same, pedal down to get on the point. But could be better coming right back in the 2nd start on Lasix.
9-Charlie May (7/5)-Despite drawing the 9-hole this race probably will need to go through Charlie. He has 3 wins in 5 starts at Nfld and has never been worse than 2nd. This 4-year-old has a huge heart and will battle until the line even if parked out the mile. The #1 has some gate speed and that should help Brett Miller work a decent trip.
Race 10
1-Night Hawk (4-1)-Came a game 3rd on Hambo day versus Beach Glass from the 8-hole. Hasn't raced at Nfld before but does good work on other smaller ovals. In my view this colt is just as fast as the chalk so it may boil down to who gets the best trip. Looks like a main player if making the turns on this oval are not an issue.
5-Bythemissal (7/5)-Burke trainee is a winning machine suffering only 1 loss in 8 races. Did take a picture in the only Nfld start after recovering from breaking stride. Deserves the morning line respect and might be an even shorter price.
