Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis | Monday, August 29, 2022

Hawthorne Racecourse has a rare Monday night card scheduled. The feature rolls in Race 3, a Fillies and Mares Open Pace with a $12,300 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

3-Fox Valley Lolo (9/2)-Leonard left off the gate from the 9-hole and did drop in but the trip took its toll down the lane. This mare usually wins when in the pocket or on the point turning for home. Useable from this post at a square price.
4-Sunrise Sweetie (8-1)-Raced well last time and the trip was bumpy. Well worth a swing at 8-1 but that price is probably not going to happen. The change to Bell last time may have helped and best to respect, this gal likes Stickney (24-6-2-6).
6-Dancin With Rose (4-1)-This is the 1st start off a claim for the Rodriguez barn and the key is Bates will be between the pipes. This pilot came a close 2nd on 8-7 and should follow the same script here and race near the top of the stack.

Race 8

2-Lady Bombay (5/2)-The 0-13 record at Haw is cause for pause but this looks like a spot to shine. The Miller barn keeps rolling and Bender has been doing well at HoP too. Should enjoy the company but needs to be stronger down the stretch.
5-Ain't She Special (9/2)-First time Husted off a claim and was blocked in last. Not sure being jammed up down the lane cost a win but should be a threat here. The issue is being over bet and that has been the case in the last 2 starts. Tough to leave out but the morning line is lofty.
9-Hello (15-1)-Couldn't catch the leader off a .59 half on a good track. The post helps the price and Bates taking the lines shouldn't hurt. Fits with this crew, could be in striking range at the top of the lane and has hit the board in 4 of 6 at Haw with 1 win.

Race 9

3-Dandy's Showtime (4/5)-This isn't a great group of 2-year-old fillies but still not sure why the 4/5 favoritism. That said, should be used and does pass foes down the lane. Will respect chances for team Leonard and drawing inside should help.
8-Some Dancing Star (7/2)-Here's a Springfield winner at 1/2 versus a soft group but did draw off by 5 lengths. More importantly, showed improvement in the 8-6 start here and was used a couple of times. Should be in the hunt at the wire if Seekman does his part.

Race 10

1-Bluewater Beach (7/2)-Raced a 1.52 mile versus Open mares and came 4th here on 7-2. Since then, has been duller than dull but now drops to the lowest level of the meet and Leonard grabs the lines. Needs to race near the lead for success and that can happen tonight.
8-Sanna Cruza A (8-1)-Qualified well on Lasix on 8-20 and was scratched out of a Fair race 3 days later. The 9-year-old mare closed in 56.2 in the qualifier and has some gate speed. Could pop at a price if fires hot off the bench.
