DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Fifth Race: Post: 3:20 PT
Top Pick: 6-Petruchio (5/2)

This once-promising four-year-old is understandably being culled from the stable after failing to live up to expectations, and this restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming field should be well within his capabilities in his second start off a long layoff;. The Richard Mandella-trained son of Into Mischief actually earned a career top speed figure when unplaced in a much stronger first-level allowance race last but against this group the multiple stakes placed gelding appears to have found his friends. With the switch to Umberto Rispoli he should be along in plenty of time and will offer reasonable value at or near his morning line of 5/2 if you can get it.

Seventh Race – Post: 4:25 PT
Top Pick: 3-Good With People (7/2)

California-bred colt has been sparingly raced the last couple of years but continues to impress in his morning drills (see below) and remains protected in a sign of confidence. The Peter Miller-trained 4-year-old may be the quickest of the quick, and if he can shake loose early he may never look back. His morning line of 7/2 seems about right. You should also consider in rolling exotic play 2-Gypsy King, away for almost a year but with competitive speed figures and making his first start since joining the Phil D’Amato barn, and 5-Appreciated, back from the Middle East with a solid San Luis Rey Downs work tab and arguably the most dangerous of the closing types.

DEL MAR WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:

SEVENTH RACE:

Good With People (August 21, Del Mar, 5f, :59.2h). Grade: A-
Very sharp solo main track breeze for P. Miller, final half mile in :22.3 and :47.4, just coasting under wraps in the final furlong after being hard held early. Been sparingly raced the past couple of years but was hitting on all fours in this move. Knows how to win races and looks cranked up and ready.

Commander (August 25, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01b TC DU). Grade: B
Was striding out nicely through the lane in solo grass drill around dogs, though he was being ridden in the final furlong, decent enough for new trainer H. Palma. Has a late-running style that isn’t always effective over this course with a short run in. Might prefer Santa Anita’s layout better.
