Favorites were winless in the Laurel Park Late Pick 4 last Friday and, with two full turf fields as part of this week’s sequence, it’s worth playing for a 50-cent base wager. Here’s a closer look:
LRL 6th race (3:14 EST) -- JACKSON HOLE adds blinkers after a troubled but deceptively good debut sprint on the turf. He broke a step slow, was impeded and shuffled to last early, came 7-wide on the turn, then was bottled up in stretch traffic when he tried to weave through rivals. He finished willingly for a 20-percent turf sprint barn and gets top billing. POST TIME debuts for trainer Brittany Russell who, interestingly, checks all the high-percentage boxes except with first-out turf starters (2-38). No matter, the $85,000 sales buy worked a pair of 5F bullets on the main track and his dam, Vielsalm, was a $250,000 earner on the grass, though almost exclusively going a route of ground. TERMSOFENGAGEMENT ships in from Penn National with a steady work tab for a 20-percent grass sprint barn and her dam, One Foxy Grey, led until the stretch in her lone turf try at one mile.
LRL 7th race (3:44 EST) -- MAYTHEHORSEBWITHU rushed up between rivals early, steadied along into the far turn, found a rail seam in the stretch and dug in gamely to prevail. He offers little value on the Pick 4 ticket but is a must use in his current form. HERD IMMUNITY got eligible for this race when he demolished a field of low-60 Beyer types when claimed for $5,000 ten weeks ago at Lone Star Park. YES SIR ROBERT dueled hard in his last two starts and came up short in the stretch. He held third against recent $20k starter allowance runner-up He Hate Me and can use his speed wisely from the outside.
LRL 8th race (4:15 EST) -- MERCURY HEAD advanced steadily toward the inside from the quarter pole until deep stretch, but she couldn’t catch speedball Ulikeapples (2-6, $75k) or hold off Stuck On Kitten (8/2-3-1, $115k) for the place spot in a 5-1/2F grass allowance at Monmouth. She is today’s solo play.
LRL 9th race (4:45 EST) – Five 3-year-olds and three 4-year-olds go 1-1/8 miles for the first time. With a combined 8-for-108 record and little recent form to fall back on, it’s an ‘ALL’ punch on the Pick 4 ticket.
