Laurel Park’s scheduled turf races last Friday were switched to the main track, resulting in short fields and payouts. This week’s Late Pick 4 features a 12-horse $40,000 claiming route and nine-horse Maiden Special Weight sprint on the lawn, perhaps leading to a lucrative payout for a 50-cent base wager. Here’s a look at the action:
LRL 6th race (3:23 EST) -- In his last three turf starts, C MY MEISTER met the likes of multiple stakes winner Red Danger (3-8 turf, $442k), Grade III winners Coinage and Main Event, Hawthorne Derby runaway winner Speaking Scout and Prince of Wales Stakes victor Duke of Love. He was outrun in a turf-to-dirt optional claiming race off the layoff earlier this month, but must be used in the leadoff leg. CASH ROCKET saved ground to the stretch, patiently waited for a seam to burst through, and won going away in his first start for a claiming price. Trainer Brittany Russell’s runners repeat 21 percent of the time and win at a 26 percent rate in their second start off a six-month layoff. (If the race is switched to the main track, use numbers 1, 4 and 13)
LRL 7th race (3:57 EST) -- ORDER OF THE KETTLE will be an underlay after he recovered from a slow start and rallied into photo-finish view in a well-bet debut. But no one in that field had posted a Beyer speed figure higher than a 46 going into the race, so the suggestion is to take him off the ticket or include several others. Hit the ‘ALL’ button.
LRL 8th race (4:31 EST) -- GRAND ESCAPE can be excused for a rough trip last out and he is a strong play off his first two running lines. He kicked clear late in a productive 4-1/2F race at Penn National in his debut, then chased the favorites in a rapid-paced stakes at Colonial Downs. He finished third, well clear of Bandits Heart, who came back to win the $50,000 Dover Stakes at Delaware Park. He is today’s solo play.
LRL 9th race (5:03 EST) – SAUCY ran a game second to 2-to-5 winner Better Call Mama, who repeated in a $40,000 claimer. She gets Lasix today but will have company on the front end in the form of Saratoga invader DIAMANT DAMHSA and perhaps others. DETERMINED CHARM could sit the ideal trip after she overcame traffic mid-turn and rallied for second behind the 3-2 winner on the cutback to 5F. SISTER MAC, whose dam was a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter, will be running late and is a must use on the ticket. KRONE gets on the ticket as a longshot as trainer Mark Shuman is 18-percent with first-time starters on the lawn. (If the race is switched to the main track, use numbers 2, 4, 5 and 11)
