Cal Expo has a 10-race program set for this evening. The feature is an Open Trot which rolls in Race 3, while the 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. That sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% take out, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7
1-Say It All Sport (15-1)-Comes off a decent effort in the 1st start since 11-13. Finished the last half nicely and will swing for a suck-around trip at a price.
2-Cenalta Flash (8-1)-Finished 2nd to a well-meant winner (6) on a wet track. This will be the 3rd start off the bench and could reward backers on a dry surface.
4-Bluebird Affection (3-1)-Raced well in the soup last week to take a picture and can land near the top of the stack again. That makes 2 good efforts to start the meet and could be up to the stiffer challenge.
Race 8
3-Unfiltered (8/5)-This 4-year-old was dominant in Midwest fair races and didn't skip a beat winning 3 straight at CalX. Will lose at some point but thinking that won't happen tonight.
Race 9
1-Brooklyn Moonshine (12-1) Hasn't shown much since coming to town. Wasn't up to facing Open company in the in 2 initial CalX starts. Then had 2 dull races on an off track, but keep in mind is 0-17 on wet surfaces. This is a much better spot and should be a price.
4-Salary (6-1)-This 3-year-old has tried hard in all 3 races here and does know how to win (21-8-2-2). Should be sitting close to the lead off the gate and can offer a square price.
5-Lucky Lil Lady (7/5)-Consistent check getter at Hoosier and Aces deserves favoritism. Comes off a nice tune-up and the price should be tiny.
Race 10
2-Benny Barsik (10-1)-Rallied to finish a close 3rd in CalX debut. Doesn't like to win, 2-48 the past 2 years but now drops to a spot to shine.
3-Officer Jim (8/5)-Went off at 3/5 last week and didn't race like an odds-on chalk. Makes the 3rd start since 9-18 and could be tight enough to win. Played some longshots in the other legs, so will use despite the short price, and hope for one of the others.
7-Native's Best Bet (12-1)-Cashed another 2nd place check last week, this time on an off track and is 0-8 on wet surfaces. Will respect chances to win at a price versus this crew if the track is fast.
8-Deweydiddonegood (6-1)-Using after a bumpy trip, drops and Plano grabs the lines. The positive driver change could make a big difference and the post adds to the potential return in a race without a standout.
