Cal Expo caps off the weekend with a 12-race card. The popular 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7
4-Wonder Of Love (2-1)-Beat everyone in this field except #5 last time. Has won 8 of 12 at CalX and should be battling the one below down the lane.
5-Shesureissomething (6/5)-Came out of the pocket to beat the one above on 3-17 and that was the veteran's last appearance. Comes off a season mark and Plano has raced this mare into top form.
Race 8
1-Sweet Young Thing (5/2)-Lackey should have in striking range at the top of the lane. Has faded near the wire in the last 2 but should get an efficient trip here and it might be enough to beat this scattered group.
3-Brooklyn Wind Up (9/5)-Just missed in last from the 7-hole in the 1st start for the Mezza barn. That outfit has been hot posting wins at a 38% clip, but the sample is small (8). Lackey stuck with #1, Plano gets the assignment and should be a player. But this is a $4k claimer who has struggled to win this year (0-10). Using off the last line but will offer no value and will hope for one of the others.
4-Outlawburntpopcorn (6-1)-Here's an opportunity to put some juice into the Pick 4 payout. This $4k claimer needs the right trip and to race close to the top. Disappointed as a chalk in last and has a chance to make amends if Pacheco provides a sharp steer.
Race 9
1-Rockin N Rollin (5-1)-Lackey returns and he has put the 6-year-old in striking range before. Having only 1 win in the last 43 starts doesn't inspire confidence but did put in a big try in last versus similar and that was 1st time Lasix. Will take a swing for some value and this post draw should help the cause.
2-Clairmont (8/5)-The Rios trainee is camera shy, but this is a soft spot. Gets a positive driver change with Irvine between the pipes. Needs a well-times move and may have met a beatable field.
Race 10
3-Bearcat Sue (6-1)-Bumps up after taking the long way around to post a win and the trip wasn't kind. Paid off at a solid 5-1 and could be a fair price here. This was Lackey's choice over #4 and the Stout barn has been taking pictures at a 35% clip over the last 30 days.
4-Devils Brother (2-1)-Posted a win at this class and then moved up but was only able to cash a 5th place check. Missed a start and now drops to the level of the last win on 3-3. Should be in the mix at a short price, doesn't like to take pictures (1-27), but this isn't a camera friendly crew.
6-Myartblongstorock (4-1)-My take is this guy won't be 4-1 and will offer a better price. If so, is worth a swing in a short field in what could be a chalky sequence. The Ohio shipper must have some issues but could be acclimated now to the new surroundings. Thayer returns, he has steered before and left from the 8-hole versus this kind in the slop after being off over 3 weeks.
