Northfield Park has a 15-race card scheduled and the headliners are an Open Handicap Trot and Open Handicap Pace. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a low 14% takeout along with a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 11
1-Elliot Moose (5/2)-Merriman got on the engine on 4-16 on a sloppy track and faded down the lane at 3/5. Should be bet here with a favorable post draw for getting the top and not looking back.
2-Backstreet Joker (3-1)-Steps-up off after a win by rallying off cover and the quick pace helped. Davis Jr should work a cozy trip this time. Has the gate speed to leave and to get the top or a pocket ride behind the one above.
Race 12
5-Light Blue Movers (2-1)-Got on the engine at 3/5 and beat easier in last. Steps up and has been in sharp form. Could be up to the challenge and knows how to beat better than this. Back on 1-15 was a picture taker versus Open Handicap company.
7-Son Of Sona (20-1)-Bumps up after wiring easier 4 days ago as on odds-on choice. Loses Merriman to the one above but is worth a swing at this price. Sugg has some gate speed to work with and could get a good early seat.
Race 13
1-Cyclone Banner N (4-1)-Steps up, has been racing well and knows how to beat this kind. Wrenn could work a 2-hole trip and that could lead to a suck-around win.
4-Almanac (5/2)-It appears Davis Jr will have the pedal down and could get on the point. No doubt this is a test, but the Holzman pupil is having a fine year (14-5-5-4). Could get the jump on the field and then it will be a question of rationing enough speed to seal the deal.
8-Bernie (5-1)-This veteran is as consistent as they come and may need to grind it out with this post draw. The fractions could be lively and knows how to battle at this level, so it's best to not overlook.
Race 14
1-Heidi's Heart (2-1)-This 9-time winner in 2022 has been on the shelf since 12-18. Lands at a good level to start the season with a win. The qualifier on 4-20 was nothing special but Roegner should have him ready. That barn has posted 26% winners over the last 30 days.
3-Star Powered Hanover (3-1)-Broke in a needed start from the 2nd tier and will hope there aren't any other driving issues. Should be in the hunt here if races back to the 155.4 qualifier on 4-13.
9-Triumphant's Chip (5-1)-If #1 shows the same gate speed as in the past chances for success go up for Merriman on this veteran. Could get an up-close seat and look to make one big brush to take command at a square price.
