Yonkers Raceway begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The feature comes in Race 8, a filly and mare Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7
1-Cheryls Shadow (7/2)-Has a better chance of sealing the deal starting from the rail. Winner of 8 in 15 tries at Yonkers should be racing on top or in the pocket and can be in the mix at the wire.
2-Morning Has Broken (5/2)-Drops to a good level for a picture and is Kakaley's choice over the one above. Hopefully won't be over bet, will need a trip as gate speed isn't a strong suit.
Race 8
1-Pure Silky (9/2)-This mare does well when racing from the rail, could win at this class and offer a square price. Consistent check-getter is winning at a high % this year (17-7-4-4).
4-Millwood Bonnie N (9/2)-Will continue looking for a solid price in this leg. Dube could step on the gas when the wings fold and land on the engine. That plan works against the $75k claimers and the same might versus this group.
7-Delitfulcatherin N (5-1)-This mare had a big try last week at long odds and Bartlett has gate speed to get a close-up seat. The fractions should be lively, and the Gillis trainee could be in striking range turning for the wire.
Race 9
1-Dragons Lucky Lady (7/5)-Has been in too tough, now drops to a spot to shine. Has taken 10 pictures in 30 starts at YR, and this is a good opportunity to add to the win total at a small price.
3-Techys Angel A (5-1)-Came close at this level 2 starts back and the trip wasn't the best. Should offer a nice return if Siegelman finds a live cover flow.
Race 10
2-Hurrikanekingjames (9/5)-Drops after a good effort in the 1st start for Berkely after being claimed for $30k on 5-8. This barn is clicking at 39% winners over the past 30 days. Logical choice at a short price but James is camera shy.
4-Simon Says Hanover (2-1)-This 5-year-old had problems and has only 32 lifetime starts but has won 8 times. Wasn't doing much at Wbsb and Bako took over the conditioning at the end of April. Paced the back half in 55.2 on Lasix in a 5-19 qualifier here. Has 3 wins in 6 races at Yonkers and could be set to fire hot off the bench.
