Northfield Park has a 15-race card featuring their signature stake race the Battle of Lake Erie which rolls in Race 11 The headliner has a $200,000 purse and a quality lineup with six of the nine older pacers having lifetime earnings exceeding $1,000,000.
The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence will have a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)
5-Ruthless Hanover (5/2)-This is a deep field and my play will be to use the two horses who have the best recent form. But and it could be a big but, they have never raced at Northfield. This 6-year-old can leave as fast as the gate car. Could be very difficult to collar if making the 1st turn isn't an issue.
6-Covered Bridge (4-1)-Winner of 3 straight comes off a strong win at London in the Camluck Final. Tyler Buter takes the lines. If the opening 3/8's is out of control this Gillis trainee could stalk and pick up the pieces down the lane.
Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)
3-Eye Ofa Tiger As (4-1)-Comes off a pair of even tries after two consecutive wins at this level. Has missed a start, and that has not happened in some time. Has a post edge on other contenders and will assume the 9-year-old will be dialed on high.
7-Rose Run Xtra (7/2)-Needs the right trip to win at this level. Wrenn could leave, land in a close-up seat and then look to rally off cover.
8-Flemsteen (5-1)-Winner of 2 in a row needs some racing luck with this post draw, but Merriman does work some magic at times. The price is right to take a swing and doesn't need to land on the point to take a picture.
Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)
3-Ocean Music (9/2)-Had no chance last time with an equipment break at ScD and should fit nicely with this crew. Has the gate speed to land on the point and may not look back.
6-Violets Rainbow (7/2)-Makes the 2nd start for the Bako barn and had missed time before her last race at Yonkers. Looking for improvement and shouldn't feel out of place here. Could get good early position and be in the hunt at the wire.
9-She'sonebadmomma (4-1)-The Burke trainee can win if Page finds a way to get a close-up seat early on. The rail horse has some gate speed, and this 4-year-old has a nose for the wire.
Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)
1-Official Treasurer (4-1)-This mare has hit the board in 44% of her 240 races at Nfld and has taken 34 pictures. Recent form has been dull but should have enough gate speed to race near the top of the stack. George Naps takes a spin, and he might be able to wake up this 10-year-old.
7-Molly Kool (10-1)-Makes the 2nd start for Rhoades, Merriman stays loyal and is 10-1 in the morning line. There is no standout in the field, actually every horse has issues at this level. Will respect connections and should be a nice price.
9-Chase The Ace (5/2)-After being claimed for $15k on 3-18 moved up and won. Then came 2nd in the next start and has fallen on hard times since. Not liking the short price and Davis Jr will need a very sharp steer. But despite the negatives it doesn't feel right to leave off the ticket.
