Favorites dominated in Laurel Park’s 50-cent Late Pick 4 last Friday, but this week’s sequence appears far more difficult and worth playing. Here’s a closer look:
LRL 6th race (3:03 EST) -- RASCALLY REBEL saved ground until the stretch after a bumpy start and finished third behind a class-rising, repeat winner and a runner-up who earned a 72 Beyer speed figure in a next-out victory. STREET HUSTLE dueled 3-wide to a brief stretch lead and finished between four rivals who were fifth or worse at the first call of the race. NATAGAR was taken 4-wide after breaking last from post 2, failed to respond to urging on the turn, now draws post 10 on the class drop in his first start since February.
LRL 7th race (3:35 EST) -- NORTHERN GLOW gets Lasix in her debut for Russell; her dam was a multiple stakes-winning Maryland bred who earned $300k. NEW ROME pressed the pace and ran second in her debut behind L STREET LADY, who won the Xtra Heat Stakes at Laurel in her next start and the Jersey Girl Stakes last week at Belmont. She gave way in a follow-up MSW try behind the co-favorites but finished between two next-out winners. She is a must use in her first start for a claiming price.
LRL 8th race (4:07 EST) -- It’s the shortest field in the Pick 4 sequence, but the six entrants are a combined 38-for-140 and in overall good form recently. Hit the ‘ALL’ button.
BEL 9th race (4:39 EST) – STORMING CLASS shows a bullet work after a cross-country trip and a troubled trip in a $50,000 turf claimer that produced four next-out winners. NICK’S LITTLE BOY draws post 12 for his debut, but trainer Phillip Capuano is 4-for-9 with first-time starters to launch his career and all but one was dismissed at 7-1 odds or less. BRIDGE TO SUCCESS makes his seasonal debut and at least gets an ideal pace to rally into if he avoids another 7-wide trip when he last raced.
