Maiden special weight races in south Florida are rarely light in numbers, and some are fairly easy to handicap.
However, anyone looking for a simple solution to Gulfstream West’s seventh race on Saturday might be a little disappointed. There are 14 entrants and very few throw-outs. Actually, the only reason for elimination was to trim down the Pick 4 ticket, which still wound up at $60 for the 50-cent exotic play.
The 7th race is the opener in the late Pick 4, and 10 of 14 runners are on this suggested ticket. Six of the 10 used are first-time starters. First Dudette is the 7-to-2 morning-line favorite off a runner-up finish in her debut, and first-timer R Happy Ending is the 4-to-1 second choice. But most of those slated to debut today have good works and are well-connected.
The other three races are not easy either, but they probably don’t require as many numbers are the opener of the sequence.
Major Key, Dance Strike and Archvillain make for a decent blend in the eighth race. Dance Strike is the lukewarm 7-to-2 favorite, but Major Key (8-1) and Archvillain (10-1) are legit players at better prices.
Starship Apollo is the one to beat in the ninth, and the 9-to-5 favorite’s biggest threat could come from Big Boy Bruno (8-to-1) closed strongly for 3rd behind Starship Apollo last time and could make an earlier run here. If you were looking to cut down the price of the ticket, a single of Starship Apollo was not be out of line.
The finale is for maiden-claimers and J C’s Proud Kitten gets a shot at the turf and Faithful Sue will attempt to carry her speed the 7 1/2 furlongs.
Here’s the suggested Pick 4 ticket:
50-cent Pick 4: 2-4-5-6-8-9-10-11-14 with 4-7-8 with 3-8 with 2-3 ($54)
