Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Sunday, July 23, 2023

Northfield Park has a 15-race card to begin the week. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 sequence starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Te Amo Blue Chip (7/2)-Got the pocket in last versus this kind but couldn't catch a well-meant winner on 6-9 who set swift fractions throughout. Recent form is sharp and could get the same trip with a better outcome.
4-Turbo Blue Chip (7/2)-This field mostly consists of horses who are camera shy this year or are coming into the race in questionable shape. Didn't get off the gate in quick fashion last time and that isn't typical. Now bumps up and can compete if its usual gate speed is there.
7-Cyclone Banner N (25-1)-The last race was similar to #3, faced a strong winner on 6-16 who set quick fractions throughout and couldn't be caught. This veteran bumps up in class and starts outside so that gives us a 25-1 morning line. Has won 7 of 24 here, if Lems leaves aggressively and lands on the point or in the 2-hole the gelding could surprise.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

3-Roger Rabbit (9/2)-This is Merriman's choice over #1, who he won with last time and is stepping up. This Sarah Andrews trainee has hit the board in 14 of 20 races and has posted 7 wins at Nfld. Ships in from the Meadows and came 2nd here versus better on 5-21 with the same pilot in command.
6-Shine All The Way (3-1)-Has only 2 wins in 27 starts this year but does good work here posting 11 wins in 38 races. This is a soft spot and could take an overdue picture if Wrenn provides a sharp steer.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

1-Johnny Chip (5/2)-Landed in a soft spot and won at first asking for the Braiden Rhoades barn. Led from gate to wire in last and Merriman could work the same plan. Steps up but should fit like a glove against this kind.
5-Not Today (7-1)-Drops out of Open company and should relish this kind. Probably doesn't have enough gate speed to land on the point but a pocket ride behind #1 could work for a picture.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

6-Fashion Chocolate (3-1)-Willing to take a couple of swings to beat #3 the 8/5 morning line chalk. This beaten favorite tried to go gate to wire and fell short by a neck on 7-16. Comes right back, faces the same kind and now Davis Jr is in the bike. That's a positive driver changes and could be the winning difference.
7-Manofmanymuscles (5-1)-Stepped up and was 15 lengths back at the first call last time. That trip didn't end well, comes right back at the same level and the price might be better than 7/2. Not sure if Merriman leaves alongside #6 or ducks and then comes after the lead later. Either way this 6-year-old should be in striking range around the last turn.
