Gulfstream West closes out its season on Sunday and the south Florida racing scene moves back to Gulfstream Park for the beginning of its Championship Meet on Dec. 2.
Some of the top barns have been moving some of their stock into the area, and it has only helped the racing at GP West. The late Pick 4 is a good draw for bettors on Saturday’s card and the sequence runs from races eight to 11.
Here’s a look at the picks and we try to give GP West the proper sendoff by taking a chance with this Late Pick 4:
Race 8
Starship Reina and Truge should be able to give it a serious run in the optional-claiming race.
Starship Reina ran off by herself last out and has been running very well since May. She seems to have some of her best moments over this strip and is made for seven furlongs. Her six-length gate-to-wire win last time was too good to ignore.
Truge closed six lengths in the final furlong going 6.5 furlongs last out and settled for 3rd. She has been in good form much of the year, has won three of her last seven, can adjust to any pace and is a must on any ticket.
Race 9
This is the spread race in the sequence, and there are five on this ticket, including Missworldvenezuela, Two Step Blues, Devilish Romance, Sober On Sunday and Mi Cuaima.
Sober On Sunday won two straight and then was third last out, earning the morning-line favorite’s role. Trainer Mark Casse’s 27-percent win percentage locally is a good enough reason anyway, and the current form of this one only adds to his chances here.
Race 10
Don’t Come Knockin, Knockout Ranger and Forever Di appear to be braced for good efforts and are include on the ticket for this 3rd leg, which is for bottom claimers that have never won two races.
Whenever you see the bottom platers going two turns, it warrants at least a semi-spread-out situation here. Don’t Come Knockin was flying at the end of his last one but finished third. An earlier start could make it very possible that he’ll be up in time. Knockout Ranger could provide some value as he was 5th vs. similar in his only start here after being competitive at Gulfstream, and improvement from him is likely. Forever Di has the best chance for value as he takes a slight class drop and breaks from the outside. He has enough speed to overcome the post.
Race 11
Cabin John, Dramaturgo and El Guerrero Azteca are playable in the finale. Cabin John keeps Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle, takes a class drop and has a big chance to improve on his debut. He was 5th on the turf and takes a slight turnback in distance.
Dramaturgo also has made just won start and should improve as he moves to two turns. El Guerrero Azteca has been competitive at this level and should be a factor as he stretches out from five-furlong races.
Here’s the suggested Pick 4 ticket:
Race 8: #4 Starship Reina, #9 Truge
Race 9: #2 Missworldvenezuela, #4 Two Step Blues, #6 Devilish Romance, #7 Sober On Sunday, #8 Mi Cuaima
Race 10: #4 Dont Come Knockin, #6 Knockout Ranger, #11 Forever Di
Race 11: #4 Cabin John, #7 Dramaturgo, #8 El Guerrero Azteca
50-cent Pick 4: 4-9 with 2-4-6-7-8 with 4-6-11 with 4-7-8. ($45)
