HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Multiple graded-stakes winner Gunnevera breezed five furlongs in 1:02.40 Sunday at Gulfstream Park West in preparation for a scheduled return to action in the Dec. 16 Harlan’s Holiday (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
The Harlan’s Holiday is slated as a steppingstone for the $16 Million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Jan. 27.
“I’m happy with the work, proud of the horse. The last two furlongs was in 23 seconds,” trainer Antonio Sano said. “The gallop out was six furlongs in 1:15.”
Margoth’s son of Dialed In was ridden by jockey Edgard Zayas in his second workout since finishing in a dead heat for fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar Nov. 4.
“It was kind of a lazy workout, but he galloped out strong,” Zayas said. “He went in 1:02 but the track is a little heavy at Calder. The way he finished was good.”
In the Classic, Gunnevera finished 6 ¼ lengths behind Gun Runner, who is also being pointed to the Pegasus World Cup.
“Gun Runner is a very good horse. My horse ran well in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but Zayas needed to move before [he wanted],” Sano said. “The Pegasus is different. It’s in [Gunnevera’s] house. It’s a very special race for the horse and very important for me.”
Gunnevera broke his made at Gulfstream in July 2016, captured the Fountain of Youth (G2) last February and prepped for the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a victory in the Tangelo Stakes over the Hallandale Beach track.
