Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis | Sunday, December 10, 2023

Cal Expo has a Sunday night 9-race card and the 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (6:35 PM PST)

1-Regil Irish (9/2)-Had a month off before making its CalX debut on 11-17. Needs to do more but should be a nice price and appears to be racing herself into shape. Svendsen may come with an aggressive try.
3-Marc Box Twenty (15-1)-Steps up after wiring the field from the 8-hole and winning easily. Appeared to have more to give and will use at the morning line price. Willing to fade #2 the program chalk who is 1-21 this year and will probably be bet down.
7-Ak Up N Attem (7-1)-Looking for a better steer and to come off cover instead of racing with the leaders into a brisk pace. The 0-15 record at CalX is a concern but this is a soft bunch, and the price should be right to use.
8-Sweet Timber (8-1)-Took control against this kind leaving from the 3-hole last week in its CalX debut. The post makes the price and has good gate speed to get a close-up seat.

Race 7 (6:55 PM PST)

2-South Gate Sally (6-1)-Made its CalX debut with an aggressive steer to get on the point and then faded down the lane. That was the 1st race since 10-15, should be tighter this time and will probably be a better price than last week's 7/2.
5-Rockin The Dragon (7/5)-Comes out of the same race as #2 and drew off that night to win by 2.5 lengths. Logically the one to beat, will be a tiny price and usually doesn't string wins together.

Race 8 (7:15 PM PST)

2-Unfiltered (5/2)-Was off for 2 months before making 3 starts at CalX. Has finished 2nd, 3rd and 2nd again and could be ready to seal the deal as those winners aren't part of this field. Should get a cozy trip and the short field won't hurt chances.
3-Ragged But Right (4-1)-Shipped here from Aces and was off 10 weeks before racing on 11-26. Finished 2nd that night and third in the last start on 12-3. Improved his race time by a second last week and Plano may look to take the wrapper off here and be forwardly placed early in the mile.

Race 9 (7:35 PM PST)

4-Outlawnothnbutsmrt (2-1)-Was 13 lengths back at the first call last week and rallied to finish 2nd. Should get away from the gate much more alertly and be closer to the lead throughout. Could be beat this bunch with a good steer from Goulet and has won 10 of 39 at CalX.
