Hawthorne Racecourse has a 12-race card, and the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 9 (9:10 PM CST)
2-Sweet Truth (9/5)-Indiana shipper lands in a great spot to get an overdue win. Last picture came on 9-8 versus $40k claimers. Recent form has been dull but bear in mind, a handful from this group could probably be bought for a total of $40k. Should relish the company and is a main player if 100% ready to go.
9-Just A Start (5/2)-Dayton invader looks like the best horse in this contest but usually works on smaller ovals. Drawing outside helps the price and best to respect. Shouldn't blush at the company and could make its Haw debut a winning one if negotiates the long stretch.
Race 10 (9:25 PM CST)
1-Sonic Flare (9/2)-Arrives from Hoosier and hasn't looked great against $10k claimers. But versus this kind the outcome could be more favorable. Best to respect, has won 2 of 5 in Stickney and Brandon Bates gets the call.
3-Major Attribute (5/2)-Changes connections and makes the first start for the owner/trainer Mike Letton. Will use considering comes right back in sequence and the usual pilot Travis Seekman will steer. This is another who is looking for a win and that can happen with a smooth trip.
7-Get E Up (3-1)-Team Husted pupil takes a good drop-in class and has a suspect 2-27 win record this year. But has finished 2nd seven times and does cash checks at Haw (17-3-3-4). Kyle Husted does the steering this time and will look for an aggressive try.
Race 11 (9:40 PM CST)
5-Fillister Photo (3-1)-Has beaten better than this on 11-13 and now gets some class relief that could lead to another picture. Team Leonard entry should get a good trip with this post draw and has won 2 of 7 in Stickney.
6-Friskie Jolie (5-1)-Won on 12-7 at HoP and lands at a good level to double up. Mike Oosting steers for the 3rd straight race and this mare has 2 wins in 7 starts at Haw.
8-Roan By Design (5/2)-Three-year-old has made it looked easy winning the last 2 starts by open lengths. Takes on older but likes to win and does well at Haw (15-3-4-2).
Race 12 (9:55 PM CST)
4-Fox Valley Presley (5/2)-Tried to wire this kind in last, faded to cash a 3rd place check and finished just behind my other selection. Has only 1 win at Haw in 20 starts and will look for Casey Leonard to stay inside and look to roll by down the lane.
7-Playoddsplay (4-1)-Started the last race a block behind actually 19 lengths back. Did rally to come within a length of winning and will look for a more alert beginning.
