Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, December 29, 2023

Cal Expo has a 9-race card to begin the weekend. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

The comments and selections below are based on an off-track.

Race 6 (8:25 PM PST)

5-Sneak Peek Hanover (4-1)-Has 1 win in 3 off-track races and now the trainer hands the line to Jacob Cutting. Does have 4 wins in 21 CalX starts. Could land in a close-up seat and benefit from a cozy trip.
7-Son Of J Lo (4-1)-To say this is a suspect field would be polite, but this veteran has a couple of things going for him. Taking into consideration the rain will be falling, the off-track record is (23-5-1-4). My guess is this team Winter Stalbaum entry goes off at nice price and could surprise with the right trip.
8-Therealgoods (15-1)-Went the long way around to win last time on a sloppy track. Paid a big price and if clicks this week the payoff should be healthy again with the outside draw plus the switch to Brett Erickson. Willing to use versus this group with an off-track record that is the best in the field (28-4-5-6).

Race 7 (8:45 PM PST)

1-Fox Valley Sidecar (5/2)-Should be a player with an efficient trip. Cutting takes the lines and he can work that type of journey.
2-Go Viral (2-1)-Did have a 2nd place finish on a sloppy track on 12-17. Camera shy, and probably will be bet. But is difficult to dismiss versus this crowd with Plano steering.
6-Ilseeifican (6-1)-James Kennedy trains and steers this 5-year-old who is making its 1st lifetime start. Willing to use at the program price. There isn't anyone to fear and the qualifier on 12-26 was good. Came the back half in 58.4 with a 28.1 last panel and has a shot in a short field.

Race 8 (9:05 PM PST)

1-Cenalta Sunrise (15-1)-Went off at 32-1 on Monday night, comes right back, had an excuse in last due to hooking wheels. Has won 3 of 9 on an off track and will look to use in gimmicks as well. Rene Goulet could get sucked around and might be able to pass a couple down the lane
4-Hunky Dory (9/5)-This is a 3-year-old filly who has won 2 straight since starting Lasix. Has been an odds-on choice and will offer no value again. Using some prices in other legs so will include a heavy chalk. Might be vulnerable, but off-track record is particularly good (15-6-5-1).
5-Lickcreek Speedway (4-1)-This 8-year-old has had issues and makes only the 4th start this year. The short field won't hurt chances, could be overlooked, and might find her fast ball versus this soft bunch.

Race 9 (9:25 PM PST)

2-JP Jetty (5/2)-Beat easier with a wide trip and should fit against this crew. James Kennedy should be stalking leaders looking to roll by down the lane.
4-Heavens Gona Rock (7/2)-Comes off a good effort versus better and at this level can be a threat. Hasn't raced on a wet track, so judge accordingly.
5-Trey Rockette (7/2)-Steps-up after taking the long way around to finish 2nd. The short price is an issue because Mark Kennedy seldom drives and wins only a handful of races a year. That said, if dialed on high could be the best horse in the field and does good work on a wet surface (15-3-3-1).

0.20 Pick 4

5,7,8/1,2,6/1,4,5/2,4,5
Total Bet=$16.20
