Cal Expo has a Sunday night 9-race card. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 6 (6:35 PM PST)
1-Contemporary Legend (3-1)-This will be the 4th start since missing a month and comes off the best effort so far. Took the long way around from post 7 and cashed a 2nd place check despite the tough trip. Looking for the upswing to continue.
5-Editorial (7/2)-Gets class relief and drops to a spot to shine. Could be sitting on a big try, Roland has choices with this post draw and does good work at CalX (19-3-5-4).
Race 7 (6:55 PM PST)
4-Starzznstripes (12-1)-Was in good form in December and had no shot on 1-12. Willing to use at the morning line price and will look for a return to recent performances at this class. Could pop at a price if brings the same effort as the last win on 12-15.
7-Give Me This Dance (3-1)-Has won 12 of 23 at CalX and has been a player versus this kind. The race may need to go through the Plano trainee.
8-Graceful Horizon (5/2)-Winner of 2 straight could win from this post. Leaving from the outside helps the price and Roland can grind his way around for another picture.
Race 8 (7:15 PM PST)
4-Bunkerhill Bill (2-1)-Gets some class relief and Plano could be out and rolling when the wings fold. This veteran doesn't win often but this is a spot for a picture.
7-Gorgeous For Real (5/2)-Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat and faces easier tonight. Svendsen should have the 10-year-old in striking range turning for the wire.
Race 9 (7:35 PM PST)
2-Stening A (9/2)-Comes of a big mile from the 8-hole versus easier. Steps-up but should get away in a better seat than in the last couple of starts and there are no standouts in this affair.
5-Down It (10-1)-Put in an even effort and a flat line after breaking in the previous race. Could be ready for an aggressive try and did beat this kind in 153.1, three starts back.
6-Miki's Magic Ride (6-1)-Plano gets the nod as the trainer is usually between the pipes. Needed the last start and got on the point from post 8 and faded. Should be tighter here and this pilot will put him near the top of the stack early on.
8-Sherwood (9/2)-Lightly raced 8-year-old could be in the hunt at the wire if gets the right trip. James Kennedy drives as well as trains and can land in a close-up seat. Could roll by down the lane if within reach of the leaders.
