Cal Expo has an 11-race card to wrap up the weekend. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 8. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 8 (7:20 PM PST)
2-Tommy Shelby (12-1)-This is an opportunity to start with a price in what might be a chalky sequence. James Lackey could work an efficient trip and get sucked around. The class drop doesn't hurt, and the price should be large.
3-Cut A Rug (9/5)-This 7-year-old often does enough to almost win but shouldn't be out of place with this crew. Luke Plano will be steering as he also owns. Small price expected, and should on the point or near the top of the stack throughout.
6-Fox Valley Sidecar (7/2)-Winners of 2 straight stepped up in last and it wasn't pretty. Now returns to a more comfortable spot to take another picture and this was Jacob Cutting's pick over #7.
8-Stenning A (8-1)-This is another who should be in play with needed class relief. Can rally with the right trip if minds manners, as long as Winter Stalbaum provides an effective drive.
Race 9 (7:40 PM PST)
1-Sneak Peek Hanover (5/2)-Jesse Pacheco steers his trainee and the plan should be a simple one for a picture. Take the short way around and stay in reach of the leaders at the head of the stretch.
2-OutLaw Blue By You (3-1)-This 10-year-old needs the right trip to win, and James Kennedy could make that happen. Can pass foes down the lane with an honest pace.
7-Marc Box Twenty (5-1)-This is the 3rd start in sequence and has been tossing hints in the last 2 races. The Roland barn is clicking and maybe Lasix will fully kick in tonight at a square price.
Race 10 (8:00 PM PST)
2-Bunkerhill Bill (7/2)-Team Plano entry got a rough trip in last and faded badly. Likes to race up front and should have little trouble landing on the point or in the pocket.
4-Sin Machqueen (2-1)-Team Cutting entry deserves respect but a small price is tough to swallow. This father-son combo keeps doing well, so will use and hope it isn't over bet.
5-Cenalta Firedragon (9/2)-Finished right behind the one above after working to get the top. That wasn't a poor effort and is another who can post a win with a sharp steer. James Kennedy is at the controls, which won't hurt, and could be overlooked.
Race 11 (8:20 PM PST)
4-Snap Krackle Ntrot (3-1)-Will take a swing with a trotter in this comingled-gate event. Qualified with hopples on, and finished 3rd behind the morning line chalk below. Hasn't raced since 11-20 and will look for this mare to be fresh and fire hot off the bench.
6-Another Tuff Woman (5/2)-Hasn't raced since 7-20 and the pacer put in 2 qualifiers in January. The 2nd tune-up on
1-28 caught my eye with a 58.1 back half to come out on top. This is a 3-year-old filly in a smorgasbord type of field, so will use and look for a strong try with Cutting at the controls.
