by Al Cimaglia

January 5, 2018

Tonight, Cal Expo will conduct a 12-race card with the feature coming in Race 8, an Open Pace for Fillies and Mares with a $6,600 purse. Race 8 also begins the 0.20 Pick 4 sequence which has a $30,000 guaranteed pool and a 16% takeout.

Congratulations are in order for driver Tony Morgan who at Dover Downs this week surpassed 16,000 wins for his career. Morgan is #2 on the all-time win list behind only Dave Palone who has over 18,000 wins. At 59, Morgan is still enjoying success as one of the leading drivers at Dover Downs.

Morgan made his mark on the Chicago circuit in the 1990's. He led the nation in wins from 1995-1997, also in 2006 and 2008. He was the Harness Tracks of America driver of the year in 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2006. In 1996 Morgan broke the single season win record compiling 843 victories. In 2006 he was only the second driver to win over 1,000 races in one season as he made 1004 trips to the winner's circle. Morgan won an amazing 101 races during January of 2006.

Comments and selections below for the Pick 4 are based on a fast track.

Race 8
3-Delightfully Wild-Beat these last week in first start off the bench, could be taking another picture.
4-Shesamysterytome-Got on the engine to just miss in last but was off 2 weeks, could be better tonight.
5-Sparkin Your Fire-Excuses in last two but should be in striking range in a competitive race.
6-Smash-Pace could be hot and that's suits this mare who could surprise at a square price.
7-Windsong Lindsey-2nd start for Yonkers invader and now Roland steers, will take a swing at 6-1 in the ML.

Race 9
1-Shark Festival-Program chalk makes 2nd start since Sept. closed in 55.2 in last, and figures to be a major player.
6-Rush And Brush-Drops out of Opens for team Roland and looks to be in a much better spot to shine.

Race 10
1-Shez A Swift-Takes a significant drop, moves inside and Plano steers, worth a swing at 6-1 in the ML.
2-Soul Diva-Wasn't Svendsen's choice but picks-up Roland and also drops to a softer spot.
8-Perfect Pitch-Svendsen's pick, Johnson trains, will respect connections and is another looking to drop and pop.

Race 11
1-Art Genta-Flew home in last and steps up but fits with this crew and should be tough to beat.
5-Bettor's Promise-Plano's choice got on the engine and almost lasted, should be in the mix again.
6-Almost Cut My Hair-Program chalk also comes off a win and deserves respect in this spot.
