Jeremy Plonk: Saturday Woodbine Stakes Spot Plays

by Jeremy Plonk

May 30, 2025

When you have reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Patches O'Houlihan and 2024 King's Plate-winning filly Caitlinhergreatness on the same card, you know it's big doings at Woodbine this Saturday. The former headlines the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier as the opening race on the card, while the latter goes in Race 10's Bell Mahone Stakes. Let's take a look at some key spot plays on the program.

Race 8: Grade 3 Royal North Stakes

Young trainer Miguel Clement takes over the family stable after the passing last Sunday of his father, Christophe, and #10 Gal in a Rush could give him his first major victory in the legacy era. This mare gets the important second-off-the-layoff start in the form cycle and arguably may improve with a move from the Tapeta to the turf. Outside draw shouldn't be a hindrance for the late-running mare. I'll play her 6-1 morning line odds and use in exacta key boxes with logicals like #8 Earhart and #2 Toupie, as well as #4 Dancing Duchess.

Race 9: Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes

#7 Webslinger is 2-1 second choice on the morning line and my preference vs. Mark Casse barnmate #3 Get Smokin, the ML chalk. Both are coming off layoffs, which isn't rare in WO stakes this time of year. Jockey Patrick Husbands is 23% winner with a positive ROI in Woodbine route stakes on the main track over the last 5 years.

Race 10: Grade 3 Belle Mahone Stakes

All eyes will be on the 4-year-old return of King's Plate heroine Caitlinhergreatness and she's breathing fiery bullet after fiery bullet in her morning workouts. But these are open-company elders and that's a challenge not worth taking an underlay price. The value play is #4 Literate at 6-1 morning line. She's 4: 3-1-0 on the Woodbine Tapeta. Note the Civaci-Drexler jockey-trainer combo is 23-for-32 in the exacta when teamed in Woodbine stakes the past 5 years. She's been facing tougher of late. Win play #4 and exacta key-box with #1, #2.
