Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Pick 3 (5-6-7) Analysis | Saturday, July 5, 2025

by Al Cimaglia

July 5, 2025

The Meadowlands has a 10-race card. The Graduated Series Final for 4-year-old Pacers (R5) and Trotters (R7) are the headliners. Two full fields of 10 will battle for a share of a $230,000 purse. My focus will be on the $1.00 Pick 3 which starts in Race 5.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5 (8:40 PM EDT)

2-Sabonis (9/2)-Last time, Dexter Dunn got the most out the Pellling pupil and missed by only a neck at 27-1 after racing wide much of the way. Now, gets post relief, and won't be close to that price. The last effort does deserve respect. According to the conditioner they have made equipment changes that appeared to help, but didn't get a smooth trip. This time Dunn could be leaving and land in a close-up seat. A more efficient journey should be coming, and the 4-year-old could seal the deal.
3-Calicojack Hanover (6-1)-Will take a swing for some value and Tim Tetrick was on the outside for almost the entire mile after leaving from this same post last week. It was calvary charge with leavers from the outside into the opening turn and the field was 12 deep. Will look for an efficient trip and recent form has been sharp. My take is the Luc Blais entry could get overlooked and has a pilot that can provide a winning trip.

Race 6 (9:05 PM EDT)

5-Outside The Fire (6-1)-Jonathan Ahle wasn't aggressive at all last week leaving the gate from the 2-hole into a soft opening quarter. That start, coming away 6th, sealed its fate. Raced big down the lane to come 3rd and won't win again unless there's a move forward off the gate. If the young pilot provides a sharp steer and is near the leaders turning for the wire it could be picture time at a nice price.
8-Ari Ferrari J (3-1)-This is the other horse from last week that didn't get a good trip at all. Was handicapped with post 8 and was hung the mile. Raced well considering the trip and this group is softer than last week. Should be there at the wire versus this bunch.

Race 7 (9:30 PM EDT)

2-Date Night Hanover (6-1)-This will be the 4th start this season and has raced well after breaking stride in its debut. Hasn't won at M1 in 8 starts but has hit the board 5 times, and Scott Zeron should get good early position. Could be sitting on the big try at a square price. Can stalk and with the right trip be the best down the lane.
5-Private Access (5/2)-Just keeps on taking pictures and lately seems to do just enough to win. Won't keep winning forever, but this will be 6 in a row if crosses the wire first. Will respect its super sharp form and hope for others with better prices.
7-Gruesome Twosome (4-1)-This is the 3rd start since 5-17 when Nancy Takter took over as the conditioner. Has been the beaten chalk in both starts, finishing 2nd, and 4th on 6-21. Yannick Gingras steered last time and started from the 8-hole. Left off the gate and couldn't find a seat. Raced parked out until just after the half then got to the rail and lost the lead right away to the ultimate winner. The trip took its toll and came a beaten 4th. Should get a better price here, and the trip almost has to improve.
