Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with a 10-race card. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7 (9:03 PM EST)
1-Willowtime (3-1)-Came off a sick scratch with 2 good efforts against this kind. Last time, was slow off the car and did rally from 12 lengths back at the half to lose by <2 lengths. The week before finished a close 4th in a needed race. Looking for a better effort tonight but not sure drawing the 1-hole will help that much.
4-Bella Cavalla (4-1)-This will be the 4th start in the Fellows barn, raced well 2 and 3 back and will excuse the last race as the trip was brutal. Doug McNair gets the nod here, that could make a difference and should be in the hunt at the wire.
10-Ghostly Casper (6-1)-Makes the 2nd start since shipping back from Yonkers where his formed slipped while facing the Invites. Drops out of Open company in a needed start last week. May have landed in a good spot to get an overdue win despite leaving from post 10. This should be go time, was cashing checks versus Preferred company when here in the summer.
Race 8 (9:26 PM EST)
6-Roll Em (3-1)-Will take a swing and hope the veteran isn't over bet. This will be the 3rd race after a sick scratch, and both starts weren't very good. Did have an excuse last week, was hung the mile and went off at 4/5. Louis Roy takes the lines, and he could be the winning difference as the trip can't get much worse.
7-Mr Ibiza N (2-1)-Was riding a 2-race win streak and that was snapped off a bumpy trip in the last start. Lost as an odds-on chalk and it's not easy for horse this caliber to win 3 straight. Will look for a smoother trip and if so could reward backers tonight.
Race 9 (9:49 PM EST)
4-Cheddar Bay (3-1)-Shipped in from FlmD, was 10-lengths back at the 1st call and then rolled the back half in 56.2 to cash a 2nd place check. Could pop at a square price if driver Daryl Thiessen has in striking range at the top of the stretch.
5-Larceny (7/2)-Got a 1st over trip in the 1st start in a month. Faded down the lane and now starts with the same post draw. Billy Davis Jr should work a covered trip this time and that would make the Auciello trainee a threat.
Race 10 (10:12 PM EST)
3-Sargeant Slaughter (6-1)-Left hard from post 9 and got on the point but that drained the tank to some degree. That was a strong try, finished gamely and could get a less taxing trip this time.
4-Wannabeabigstar (2-1)-The program chalk checks some boxes, gets big post relief and class relief. Can't leave off the ticket as it should be the one to beat with a smooth steer. But has had trouble passing foes down the lane and will likely offer no value.
6-Premier First Star (3-1)-Dropped to this level in last and certainly out raced its 48-1 odds to finish 3rd. Did protect its position leaving into a 26.3 opening quarter, stayed inside and got shuffled back. Showed some life down the lane with a 26.4 final quarter and could improve here with a choice post draw.
