Bing Crosby Stakes Headlines Del Mar's Late Pick 4

July 28, 2018

If you can’t get excited about the Late Pick 4 at Del Mar on Saturday, I’m wondering what it will take.

Seriously, two good stakes races in the California Dreamin’ Stakes for veteran California-breds and Grade I Bing Crosby for the best sprinters in the west are the middle pair in the sequence.

Knockdown drag outs, both of them.

Two intriguing maiden events round out the exotic play and altogether they make an enticing Pick 4.

The Bing Crosby has a terrific lineup, including Roy H and American Anthem, who are 2-1 and 5-2 on the morning line. But it’s far more than just those two.

Ransom the Moon is winless in his last four, and that last victory came in the ’17 Bing Crosby, He came from just off the pace and scored nicely over Roy H.

Ransom the Moon starts out at 6-1 on the morning and goes into this with a different approach as last year. Trainer Phil D’Amato ran him in the Met Mile at Belmont last out. He finished fifth of 11 and that could be mighty helpful leading up to this. No one is calling the Met Mile a prep, but it might help Ransom the Moon finish full of run in a race with some legit pace on.

Roy H beat Ransom the Moon and others in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship and in three Breeders’ Cup Sprint over the Del Mar strip. He most recently ran a bang-up 3rd to Mind Your Biscuits and X Y Jet in the Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan. Peter Miller has put a long a good string of works into him since the last week of June and his star sprinter looks ready to go.

American Anthem is perfect in two starts this year and was all out for a head win over St. Joe Bay – a competitor in here – in the San Carlos at Santa Anita. The Bob Baffert charge broke his maiden at Del Mar in his 1st and has won four races since then.

The California Dreamin’ is chock full of veterans, including What a View, Ashleyluvssugar, Pee Wee Reese and Soi Phet. They bring in impressive credentials but several other have a shot in this one.

Pee Wee Reese is the look warm 7-2 favorite for D’Amato. He’s won open stakes races, including the American at Santa Anita and would probably be a heavier choice had he started his win in the Hernandez Stakes on Jan. 1.

Here’s the suggested ticket for the Late Pick 4 at Del Mar:

Race 7: #1 What a View, #3 Ashleyluvssugar, #4 Pee Wee Reese, #10 Soi Phet.
Race 8: #3 Broome, #9 Neon Gypsy, #12 Calimonco Action.
Race 9: #3 Roy H, #4 American Anthem, #5 Ransom the Moon.
Race 10: #7 Ocean Fury, #9 Tanker, #12 Tariq.
50-cent Late Pick 4: 1-3-4-10 with 3-9-12 with 3-4-5 with 7-9-12 ($54).
