Sunday, August 12: Hawthorne $30K Guaranteed Late Pick 4 Ticket

by Al Cimaglia

August 12, 2018

There's an 11-race card on tap at Hawthorne to wrap up the weekend. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 sequence rolls in Race 8, it has a $30,000 guaranteed pool and will be my focus.

On Saturday drivers Kyle Husted, Kyle Wilfong and Ridge Warren all made two trips to the winner's circle. Trainer Brett Wilfong led the conditioners with two wins.

Last night, the Milstein was sort of a mess from the start. One of the challenges of handicapping on a half mile track is to correctly predict the script for the entire race. One of my key horses #5-Dorsoduro Hanover was used aggressively to start, got caught wide the entire mile and backed up the outer flow at the 3/4 pole. In between Lather Up once again had trouble on the turns and broke. The ultimate winner, #3-Thinkbig Dreambig realized a great two-hole trip and scooted past the #1-Jimmy Freight to snag the win. Driver Jordan Stratton continued his dominance in top stakes in Ohio and the two longest shots in the race had a fortunate journey and came third and fourth.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8

5-Frontier Red - Husted sticks and this is a soft bunch, should be a threat if steps up off of last effort.
7-Autumn Storm - Makes 4th start for Lewis and Curtin takes a seat again, can be in the hunt with a smooth trip.
8-Fox Valley Maya - Back from the fairs and was facing better here earlier in meet, best effort can win this.

Race 9

2-Island Campaign - Husted may have let the clutch out too early in last, could be sitting on a big try tonight.
4-Mocking Robin - Almost made it 3 straight last week at this class, no reason to not include in the mix.
8-Model - Took the long way around but still posed for a picture in last, will respect off that effort.

Race 10

3-Shooting Straight - 9/5 favorite looks the part after a nice win from the 7 hole.
5-Legacy Kash - Sharp effort in coming 2nd to #3, could reverse outcome tonight.

Race 11

1-Theresareason - Will take a swing at 15-1 from the rail with Wilfong versus this crew.
2-Ezpay - Winner of >$82,500 last year and can't find his mojo so far in '18, but tonight is a good time for change.
5-Dune Dame - Switched tactics in last and was aggressive, gets a better post draw and could be dialed on high.
9-Dancin Daisy - Confident win last week and now steps up, post will make for a better price.
