Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Late Pick 4 Analysis-$30k Guaranteed

by Al Cimaglia

September 2, 2018

Sunday night Hawthorne will conclude the weekend with a 10-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, it has a $30,000 guaranteed pool and will be my focus.

Last night, the two stakes from Yonkers went pretty much according to script but things turned south north of the border.

In The Yonkers Trot, Six Pack was tons the best and won easily. In the Messenger Springsteen had a second over trip but collapsed on the final turn as Stay Hungry edged out a very game Jimmy Freight. Stay Hungry is now a Little Brown Jug victory away from the pacing triple crown.

At Mohawk the great Lazarus was soundly beaten by McWicked who was parked first over for about a half mile. The classy McWicked was off my radar, and it was revealed after the race they nursed a quarter crack since his last start. That  makes his first over journey even more amazing. In the Maple Leaf Trot, Crazy Wow at 31-1 stunned just about everyone watching and paid $64.20 to win. Jody Jamieson put a nice steer on the Marcus Melander trainee who got through along the rail and exploded down the lane. Crazy Wow raced without shoes and the trainer thought that added another gear.

Last night at Hawthorne, Casey Leonard led the drivers with a five bagger. It was a family affair as the top conditioner was Terry Leonard, Casey's father who made three trips to the winner's circle.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Spirit O'Mar-Worth a swing versus this field at 15-1 in the ML, fits with these.

2-Chip's For All-Should be in striking range and could sweep by down the lane.

5-Bo I See Time-Winner of 4 straight is coming back on 4 days rest, best to respect.

Race 8

1-Rockin Roxine-Sharp win the hard way in 3rd start for MacKenzie and is a threat again with Leonard from the rail.

4-Among The Elite-May get the cover he lacked in last, if so can motor late.

5-Lilac Laurey-Although camera shy, last was a confident win and looks like a player here.

Race 9

1-Wimple's Dimple-Finally got a win and may have gotten a confidence boost, now main foes are outside.

7-Shooting Cool-Comes off an easy win and can track cover for an encore.

8-Frontier Elsa-3rd start for Adam barn and should be dangerous with a good trip and quick pace.

9-Finleys Filly-Made every call a winning one for Team Leonard, post will be a challenge but should help the price.

Race 10

2-Too Tall Jones-Comes off a break but fits with this soft group and gets a good starting spot.

5-Sunburst Glide-If this Guccio filly finds some pop at the end of the mile, she can win at a square price.

0.50 Late Pick 4
