by Churchill Downs Press Release

March 5, 2019

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Tuesday, March. 5, 2019) – Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s Grade I-winning duo of Game Winner and Improbable along with last weekend’s Xpressbet Fountain of Youth (Grade II) winner Code of Honor are the individual morning line favorites in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager but “All Other 3-Year-Olds” is once again expected to be the overall preference when betting concludes Sunday.

Veteran odds maker Mike Battaglia has installed “All Other 3-Year-Olds” as the 4-1 early choice in the field of 24 betting interests for the three-day pool, which opens Friday at noon (all times EDT) and concludes Sunday at 6 p.m. The advance betting will be staged concurrently with the year’s only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager. In addition to Win and Exacta betting, an Oaks/Derby Future Double is part of the Future Wager betting menu. The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which includes the Oaks/Derby Future Double, will close a half-hour later than the KDFW at 6:30 p.m.

Unbeaten 2-year-old champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade I) winner Game Winner is expected to garner the most support among the 23 individual betting interests with morning line odds of 5-1. The Kentucky Derby Future Wagers, which feature $2 Win and Exacta wagering, provide fans of Thoroughbred racing with opportunities to place bets on possible entrants in the $3 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) at odds that could be far greater than those available on the day of the race. The 145th running of Kentucky Derby, America’s greatest race and the first leg of the Triple Crown, is set for Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs. The $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) will be run the day before on Friday, May 3.

Total handle for Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager on Nov. 22-25 was $258,389. “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” closed as the 6-5 favorite with Game Winner at 5-1. The Pool 2 betting on Feb. 8-10 reached $533,977. Again, “All Other 3-Year-Olds” was the 5-2 favorite with Game Winner at 5-1.

“All Other 3-Year-Olds” has closed as the Pool 3 favorite in 13 of the last 16 years. The lone exceptions were Pyro (4-1 in 2008), Uncle Mo (3-1 in 2011) and Mohaymen (7-2 in 2016). Justify was the 6-1 individual favorite in Pool 3 last year and paid $14.40 to win compared to the $7.80 bettors were paid on Derby Day. Last year’s Pool 3 exacta of Justify and Good Magic returned $245.80 as opposed to $69.60 on the day of the race. The inaugural Oaks/Derby Future Double, which included Monomoy Girl, came back $71 versus $33.20 on May 4-5.

After this weekend, the fourth and final Kentucky Derby future wager pool will be April 5-7 (Pool 4).
