Everyone likes a rags-to-riches story – especially a true one – and Brett Mclellan, owner of Harryhee is just one more good performance away from that today.

Saturday’s Gulfstream Park feature is the $50,000 Trinniberg Handicap, named after the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and champion, and it’s the second leg of the Hallandale, Fla., track’s late Pick 4 I’m tackling today.

Harryhee is going to be part of that group that goes the seven furlongs, and it’s been quite a leap from bottom claimers to stakes level for the 5-year-old ridgling by the Broken Vow sire Hello Broadway and from the Monashee Mountain mare Maryshee.

Mclellan and high-percentage conditioner Ralph Nicks took a dip into the claiming pool on Feb. 12 and put down $6,250 for the runner who at the time had won five races. From there, he raced in optional claiming races from $10,000 to $12,500, which lure some solid runners that are opted out of the claiming prices. Harryhee won his last two races – each under jockey Luca Panini – and stands a good chance today.

Harryhee will face better than he’s seen but will be part of a handful used on the Pick 4 ticket from the 10th race. Indian Guide comes off the turf and will be dangerous as he turns back in distance. Very Very Stella was 2nd in a stakes race last time and goes from a mile down to seven furlongs, and Richard the Great comes in off a narrow win over French Quarter, who is always well played, gives a good effort and is also in this event. Harryhee will be right at the heart of the ticket but is by no means a single. Unlike last week’s Saratoga ticket that amounted to $4.50 after scratches and yielded $109, this one will take more of an investment as the sequence includes some challenging races.
