August 19: Mohawk Harness Picks

by Al Cimaglia

August 19, 2017

Saturday night's Mohawk card will feature Ontario Sire Stakes Gold action. There will be two divisions of 2-year old colts and geldings with a purse of $98,800 going in Race 5 and in Race 7. The attention turns to 2-year old fillies in Race 2 and in Race 8, each dash will have a $96,400 purse.

Congratulations go out to Canadian driver James MacDonald who captured the 2017 World Driving Championship at Red Shores Race track in Prince Edward Island. It was the first time a driver from Canada has won the event on their own turf. It was a great night for the 31-year old MacDonald who is a regular on the Mohawk circuit and a native of Prince Edward Island. MacDonald, joins Herve Filion and his nephew Sylvain as the only other Canadians to win the event. Marcus Miller, the U.S. representative finished third.

Last night at Mohawk, Doug McNair led all drivers with four winners and his dad Gregg led the trainers with two trips to the winner's circle.

On Friday, my posted Pick 4 ticket at Hawthorne connected as the 4-3-7-6 combination paid $67.30 on a 0.50 bet. Tonight, my focus will be on the Early 0.20 Pick 4 with a $50,000 guaranteed pool which begins in Race 4.

Comments and selections below are based on fast track.

Race 4
3-Traceur Hanover-Drops and was at this same level on 8/7 and won from 3 hole. Waples should work a trip from this post.
6-Ideal Jet-Drops, also a winner at this class on 7/29. Jamieson takes a swing and if pace is quick could pop at a square price.
7-Blatantly Best-Program chalk with McNair deserves respect but is camera shy.

Race 5
1-Shadow Moon-Perfect 3 for 3 in career and likes to race with the lead and has a good starting spot for that style.
2-Phantom Seelster-Henry chose the #1 so Filion takes a seat, doesn't hurt. Handy 2-year old shouldn't be overlooked.
10-Jimmy Freight-Post makes it difficult but has won a Gold event from the 7 hole. Very nice colt, only needs a good journey.

Race 6
2-Jins Shark-Has had trouble sealing the deal but fits well. Raced near lead in a quick pace in last and finished that mile well.
3-Easy Lover Hanover-Qualified after 2 breaks and tuned up with a 53.4 back half. 6-1 ML and if ready can beat these.
5-Rockin In Heaven-Throwing out last off a judge's scratch looks like a serious player at this level.

Race 7
1-Hudson Phil-Comes off an impressive race at Grand River and is 2 for 2 at Mohawk, consider at an 8-1 ML.
2-Lucky Sport-Throwing out last start from post #9 at Grvr. Has raced very well at Mohawk, and now gets post relief.
5-Evening Play-McIntosh 2-year old toyed with the field from 9 hole in last. Luke warm favorite deserves attention.

0.20 Early Pick 4
