September 3: Hawthorne Harness Picks

by Al Cimaglia

September 3, 2017

Hawthorne concludes the weekend with a nine-race card and a Late Pick 4 with a $20,000 guaranteed pool. The feature will be a conditioned pace for fillies and mares that will roll in Race 6 and has a $9,900 purse. The Race 9 Jackpot Hi-5 carryover has now reached $127,171.92.

Last night the rains showed up at Yonkers and the track was sloppy, but the selections at Mohawk worked out well.

In Race 2 the (6-5) exacta hit cold and paid $35.80. The top selection, #6 beat the big chalk and paid $21.80 to win. If you worked the #6 into doubles, the $2 (1-6) double paid $99.40, and the #1 was the morning line favorite. In Race 5 the (7-5) exacta connected and paid $13.80, and they were the top two selections. In Race 6 the order of finish, 4-2-7 was as selected. The $2 exacta paid $10.90 and the (4-2-7) trifecta paid $10.76 on a 0.20 bet. In Race 9, if the three selected horses were boxed the $2 exacta (5-7) would have hit and it paid $40.20.

At Hawthorne, the track turned sloppy and Mike Oosting and Jim Lackey led all drivers with two winners. Lackey and Kimberly Roth made two trips to the winner's circle as trainers.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6
3-Raw Diamond-Price shot had a decent try at this level in last. Worth a look, pace should be quick and that helps chances.
5-Are You Terry-Sharp win in last and will play against #4 the ML chalk who is coming back to race in only 3 days.
6-Lakeside MS Queen-Back from Indiana and has had success at Hawthorne and with Oosting. Looking for a big try.

Race 7
3-Dragon Jewel-Camera shy but gets post relief tonight and should be in the mix to the wire.
6-Send For Me-Passed horses in the lane, which was an improvement. This isn't a deep field so best to not overlook.
7-Ideals Oath-Lightly raced nine-year old has the best form in the field.

Race 8
1-In Your Eye-Could be a drop and pop situation as drops in for a tag. Should be bet hard with Leonard from the rail.
4-Bigger N Better-4-year old has tailed off but this is the 3rd start on lasix and half the field is 3-years old.
6-Foundmytreasure-Won in straight non-winners and then was a sick scratch. Should like the company if ready.

Race 9
1-Do You Dare-Fits well, has been winning every other start. Faded to 4th in last so if pattern continues it is picture time.
3-Final Gift-Sharp win in last and now steps up slightly. May string together another good outing and is 9-1 in the ML.
6-Jewels Hall-May look to grind it out and can close well. Race could set up nicely as it could be a quick pace.
8-Ashless Cocktail-Leads field in 2017 earnings, also could benefit from a brisk pace and some live cover.
