Headlines

The Sonoma County Fair (Santa Rosa) meet at Golden Gate Fields continues this week with its second three-day run, Friday through Sunday. The feature race this week will be Saturday’s $50,000 Robert Dupret Derby for 3-year-olds at 1-1/16 miles on turf. Entries will be drawn Wednesday. Note that Golden Gate’s traditional summer-fall meet will open next Thursday, August 13 and run through October 4. Jockey Juan Hernandez, runaway leading rider here during the winter-spring meeting, has since moved his tack to Del Mar and the Southern California circuit. Kyle Frey, coming off a meet title at Pleasanton, appears poised to assume a leadership role. The $1 minimum pick six has a carryover of more than $16,000 into Friday’s racing.

Stronach 5

The Stronach 5 paid $5565.30 on July 31 despite no winners over 4-1 odds in the sequence. Golden Gate’s participation in the wager will resume with next week’s opening of the summer-fall meet. The Stronach 5 for August 7 will be comprised of the following races (all times Eastern):

Leg A – Laurel Park Race 6 with an approximate post time of 3:21
Leg B – Gulfstream Park Race 8 with and approximate post time of 3:40
Leg C – Laurel Park Race 7 with an approximate post time of 3:59
Leg D – Gulfstream Park Race 9 with an approximate post time of 4:14
Leg E – Laurel Park Race 8 with an approximate post time of 4:32

--Favorites were 5-for-12 on turf last week for a 42% win rate, including 2-for-2 in the maiden claiming grass ranks.
--Three jockeys accounted for more than half (16 of 30) of the victories last week. Kyle Frey (7-21), William Antongeorgi (5-13) and Kevin Orozco (4-15) all hit at 27% or more.
--The jockey-trainer tandem of Kyle Frey and Andy Mathis started the meet 5: 3-0-1, all at 5-2 or less odds, and with all 3 wins in the maiden claiming ranks.
