Sunday, January 24: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Santa Anita

by Jerry Shottenkirk

January 24, 2021

The Clocker’s Corner Stakes is the centerpiece of the Late Pick 4 Sunday at Santa Anita and brings its together some proven turf sprinters and probably requires at least three runners in its leg the sequence.

The race is the second of the Late Pick 4 and is carded as the sixth on the eight-race card.

After finishing 2020 with ineffective performances going longer in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby and the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile, Strongconstitution takes his game to six furlongs and will be among the stronger contenders in the allowance optional claiming race. Trainer Doug O’Neill sends him out ‘blinkers on’ and has the speed to get into the game earlier and has the class to be a factor late.

He’s not a single on the $54 suggested ticket as Thanks Mr. Eidson and Strike Me Down are in good form and are capable of being important players down the lane.

Here’s a look at the runners on the suggested ticket:

Race 5 (5:30 p.m. ET, maiden claiming)

IT’S A RIDDLE has had 14 chances but is probably running her best. Can be a forward factor from an inside post.

WICKS AND CHAPPIES was on the board in her last three and was third at this level last out. Capable of rising to the occasion.

MY GIRL PEARL was third at a higher level three races back and is back to the main track after a couple of turf attempts.

Race 6 (6 p.m. ET, Clocker’s Corner Stakes)

STRONGCONSTITUTION turns back from two-turn races in which he weakened. Those came against Grade 1 and 2 company and he is well spotted here.

THANKS MR. EIDSON has three seconds and a win in his last four, all at this level, and has been able to adjust to various pace scenarios.

STRIKE ME DOWN was on the board in his last four and ran well on the turf at Woodbine and Laurel. Classy and a big player.

Race 7 (6:30 p.m. ET, claiming)

MADAME BARBARIAN weakened going long last time and should benefit from turning back in distance. Likely to be the mix throughout.

TIZ TOFFEE dug in at Del Mar last out and was a winner in February when she visited Santa Anita. Is three of eight over the strip and can be a factor from the start.

ETERNAL ENDEAVOUR came on well for third last time could benefit from a fast pace in from of her.

Race 8 (7 p.m. ET, starter allowance)

CAERULEAN was third in a three-horse driving finish last out and had won two straight just prior to that. Will dig in and should be tough to outrun.

QUICK FINISH was second in her last two, both on the turf. Can get a good trip under hot-riding Hernandez.

CITY RAGE was an even third going longer and can finish better in this shorter race. Knocking on the door.

COAST OF ROAN makes his first turf sprint appearance after a couple of wins going longer. Capable of a good stalking run here.
