Friday, January 29: Frank Carulli's Stronach 5 Picks

by Frank Carulli

January 28, 2021

The Stronach 5 on Friday, January 29 features races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields. With just a 12% Takeout and a $1 minimum, the Stronach 5 is horse racing's most player-friendly wager.

LEG A // LAUREL PARK // RACE 8 (3:55PM ET) // AOC // 1 MILE (DIRT)

MALIBU BEAUTY is worth a price stab in a deep field. She improved late in her 2-year-old season, beating a next-out runaway to break her maiden and setting the pace in a stakes route that produced The Grass Is Blue, recent winner of the Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct. Trainer Gary Capuano is 3-7 with a $5.42 R.O.I with first-time Lasix runners (excluding first-time starters) the last three years. With the late scratch of favorite FRAUDULENT CHARGE, add JOURNEYTOTHEMOON to the ticket. She rallied for a debut victory in a 'key' maiden race, then held second at 1-1/16 miles against runaway repeater Wonderwall, who tried stakes company next out.

LEG B // GULFSTREAM PARK // RACE 8 (4:11PM ET) // CLAIMING // 1 MILE (DIRT)

JANUARY WON held her consistent form for new trainer Kent Sweezey, launching a 3-wide bid at the quarter pole and gaining late on 9-1 upsetter Powerful Ally, a $207k earner who re-awakened that day but set a clear pace to the stretch next out as the beaten favorite. ROSAS WAY blew past the co-favored pace setter in the final furlong on the stretchout from 6F to one mile and sprung a 17-1 upset. Her winning time was comparable to a 3-year-old MSW race on the same card and she appears rounding to another good effort in her third start for this barn.

LEG C // GULFSTREAM PARK // RACE 9 (4:42PM ET) // AOC // 5 FULONGS (TURF)

DANESSA BABY dueled through a :43.57 half-mile with the second favorite before the runners who were 3rd, 7th and 8th at the first call rallied to sweep the money. She should control a softer pace today and go non-stop from the rail.

LEG D // GOLDEN GATE FIELDS // RACE 3 (4:49PM ET)// MAIDEN CLAIMING // 5 1/2 FURLONGS (ALL WEATHER)

UNAFIESTAPARATODOS loomed boldly at the top of the stretch but settled for second best in her 5F debut. She finished one length in front of MARK WHATS MINE, who battled back on the rail after she was passed on the lead on the turn and appeared to be fading. THE GEE FACTOR, outrun in her MSW debut on the Santa Anita turf, ships in for O'Neill. The fifth-place finisher in that race was a troubled fourth for $50,000 in a blanket finish next out.

LEG E // GULFSTREAM PARK // RACE 10 (5:13PM ET) // CLAIMING // 6 FURLONGS (DIRT)

With six class droppers, four runners who lost at 7-2 odds or less in their last start and five starters arriving in new barns recently, we are spreading deep in the final leg of the Stronach 5.
