It's closing night at Hawthorne Race Course and there will be mandatory payout on all gimmicks and that includes the Jackpot Hi 5. The Hi 5 pool is guaranteed at $500,000, and the carryover is $179,305. My guess is the pool will surpass the guarantee but there's no telling how high it will go. In July, the pool surged well above $1,000,000 and on that night the guarantee was also $500,000. The 12-horse field for Race 5 is an inconsistent group of freshmen pacers, five of which are still maidens.
For the Night of Champions, 10 of the 12 winners were from the three posted selections and five of the picture posers were my top choice. Kyle Wilfong led the drivers with three wins. Conditioner Terry Leonard was the top trainer of the night with two trips to the winner's circle.
Xpressbet customers will receive a 20X points bonus on all wagers on the Hawthorne closing night card.
Comments below for the Jackpot Hi 5 are based on a fast track.
Race 5-Incredible Tillie Consolation-2yr. old colts & geldings-Purse $30,000
1-Big Boy Frazier-This boy doesn't like to pass anyone down the stretch. If the stars line up maybe hits the fifth spot and could make a case to eliminate.
2-Sports Creek-Finally looked like a game winner in last. From this post shouldn't have any excuses for not being a main player. Leonard's choice over the #5.
3-Fox Valley Hipster-Has lacked a closing kick, can't see better than a 4-5 finish and could make a case to leave off the ticket.
4-Sheriff Coffey-Making this horse the 5/2 ML favorite says it all about this group. Has hit the board in only 2 of last 6. Raced on Thursday and will look to use but I'm not all in for the top spot.
5-Bootleg Island-Hasn't look great in last 3 starts, but has 4 wins this year and the others together have 6. Will respect chances to be in the mix and consider on top as well.
6-Piscotty-Probably not a win candidate but will use on the ticket and could provide some pop to the payout. Leading trainer usually has them ready, with a smooth journey could be in the hunt.
7-Sumpun Great-Could have a chance to break maiden as last was better. Has been bet down at times, also has been a victim of poor post draws in other starts.
8-Captain Wish-Leaving off the ticket, will take a giant wish to hit the High 5.
9-Not Me Gram-Recent form is poor, maybe at the bottom of the High 5 spot and that could be a stretch.
10-Ernie The Mooss-This post will likely pose a big challenge for a win. Last was dull, but will respect chances to be part of the ticket. Would need a smooth trip but best to not overlook.
11-Talk About It-Post will add to the price and will consider to be in the mix despite 2nd tier starting spot.
12-J B's Enigma-Similar to a few others, it would be a surprise if crossed the wire first, but can use in the 2-5 slots.
