Big Stakes Day, Solid Pick 4 Play at Gulfstream

by Jerry Shottenkirk

September 29, 2017

Six stakes events are part of the 14-race program Saturday at Gulfstream Park and the tail end of the card will be worth the wait.

The Late Pick Four includes two stakes -- the Our Dear Peggy Stakes (12th) and the Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes (13th) -- and a pair of challenging maiden races.

Each of the four races is evenly matched, and this Pick Four ticket has three horses in each race and totals $40.50.

Maiden special weights company opens the sequence and if there’s one to spread a bit more than others, this would be it (if you’re willing to expand your ticket beyond the 3x3x3x3 strategy). Two of the three representatives on the ticket are first-time starters. Razorback Lady ran second in her debut and comes back with a couple of good works to her credit, and firsters Jost Sayin and Tropical look ready for their initial foray into the game.

The Our Dear Peg is another three-horse play here and the lean here is toward the triumvirate of Homemade Salsa, Gift of Glory and Denver. Homemade Salsa was impressive from just off the pace in her only start. She moves over to the turf and stretches out, and the daughter of Two Step Salsa likely will have a hand in the pace. Gift of Glory took five times to break her maiden and on most occasions closed well. Looks good at a mile and despite losing to some of these earlier, she appears to have figured his out and will be one to hold off.

Denver was an easy dirt sprint winner last time and the Awesome Again filly has a solid chance to get even better with distance.

The My Dear Girl is the day’s headliner and Awesome Mass, Dessert Honeys and Little Bridge have a decent chance for success in the distance race over the main track. Awesome Mass has back off the pace in her last two and looks ready for her chance to get two turns. Dessert Honeys is a maiden but lost the Susan’s Girl by a head in her second start. She began her career with a closing fourth at Saratoga and the fact that she’s a maiden should not be a hindrance in your handicapping for this restricted race. The price play could be Little Bridge, who won her only start in come-from-behind and her pedigree suggests she should be a threat at the distance.

Here’s the suggested Pick 4 ticket:

Race 11: #1 Razorback Lady, #5 Jost Sayin, #9 Tropical. (1-3-9).

Race 12: #3 Homemade Salsa, #6 Gift of Glory, #7 Denver. (3-6-7).

Race 13: #3 Awesome Mass, #5 Dessert Honeys, #7 Little Bridge. (3-5-7).

Race 14: #3 Guidonia, #8 Faithful Sue, #9 Nicky’s Warrior. (3-8-9).

 50-cent Pick 4: 1-5-9 with 3-6-7 with 3-5-7 with 3-8-9. $40.50.
