Frank Carulli: Pimlico Late Pick 4 Picks | Friday, June 25

Pimlico's late Pick 4 today changed its complexion after turf racing was canceled for the weekend, but here's some thoughts to help shape your ticket for the 50-cent wager:

RACE 5 (2:40PM ET) // OPTIONAL CLAIMING // 1 MILE (DIRT // OFF TURF)

Four runners remain after 11 scratches, but all have a chance. TUSK, first or second in 5 of 10 starts on the main track, raced 4-wide on both turns in a 6-horse field but still got past pace setter HARD FOUGHT to win. The well-traveled TRIFOR GOLD stays in off the also-eligible list and should lead for as far as he goes. CAN'T PASS IT UP had a useful try off a 7-month layoff, finishing a distant third behind Dream Big Dreams, our top choice in today's 7th race.

RACE 6 (3:12PM ET) // OPTIONAL CLAIMING // 1 1/16 MILES (DIRT)

Spread deep in this leg of the Pick 4, but if you want to shorten your ticket, use Forest Fire (10-1), who worked a pair of bullets at Parx since his last start. He finished first or second in 20 of 38 starts on the main track, was overhauled by the odds-on favorite two back and no match for two rivals last out who are a combined 15-55 with $538,000 in earnings.

RACE 7 (3:45PM ET) // ALLOWANCE // 1 1/16 MILES (DIRT // OFF TURF)

DREAM BIG DREAMS was taken 4-wide to stalk the pace, advanced on the final turn to engage Belmont invader Doubleoseven at the top of the stretch and settled for second after a hard duel. DIG CHARLIE DIG benefits most in this turf-to-dirt route, but he must shift out of 'second' gear as the likely favorite. He 'surged' late to finish second to the troubled favorite three starts back, rallied wide on the final turn two back and couldn't reach the pace setter while saving ground last out. BENANDJOE chased the 8-5 winner around the track and finished second, but the end result is a bit deceiving after the race favorite pulled up.

RACE 8 (4:17PM ET) // CLAIMING // 1 1/16 MILES (DIRT)

MY SACRED PLACE plunges to the bottom level and towers over the field on paper for Team Russell. ARTILLERY, no threat to the winning favorites in his last two starts, could be heard from late on the class drop and is worth considering as a backup play at a decent price.
