Frank Carulli: Pimlico $15K Carryover Late Pick 5 Ticket | Friday, July 30

July 29, 2021

Favorites went winless in Pimlico's Late Pick 5 last Sunday, creating a $15,000 carry-over for the final five races on this Friday's card. The 50-cent wager is well worth taking a look at.

RACE 4 (2:07PM ET) // CLAIMING // 5 FURLONGS (TURF)

ALWAYS MISBEHAVING chased the 7-1 winner through solid fractions and held gamely for second, but he benefited from a 'rushed' and troubled favorite. MARSAC, the only other turf winner in the field, left too much work to do after a slow start as the favorite at Delaware Park last out. PEPE AND HEYWOOD vied 3-wide early on a sloppy track, shook clear turning for home and held safe the even-money favorite. He is by Mosler, winner of the 2016 Laurel Dash on the turf.

RACE 5 (2:38PM ET) // OPTIONAL CLAIMING // 6 FURLONGS (DIRT)

HUFFLEPUFF survived a 3-way duel for the lead and held well until mid-stretch before the deep-closing top pair arrived. DEVILISH AFFAIR benefited from the duel and got up for second, but she steadied twice along the way. The race winner, Behind the Couch, was coming off a recent allowance runner-up finish to an odds-on winner who ran third in a follow-up stakes try. PRACTICALLY DIZZY broke last in a maiden sprint, rushed quickly along the rail to duel through the turn and drew away from the odds-on runner-up at Monmouth Park.

RACE 6 (3:10PM ET) // OPTIONAL CLAIMING // 5 FURLONGS (TURF)

HEIR PORT steadied twice on the turn but raced evenly in an 5F turf allowance won by Fox Rox (25-106, $533k). MAMBA ON THREE projects a similar trip to when he rallied from just off the pace to win his first two starts on turf. He bid 4-wide on the turn on a yielding turf but flattened out in a stakes race last out. RAD PAISLEY validated a well-bet but troubled debut on the turf with an easy victory over a big favorite on the main track. He is a must use on the ticket at 12-1 on the morning line.

RACE 7 (3:47PM ET) // ALLOWANCE // 6 FURLONGS (DIRT)

MY MY GIRL seeks a duplicate of her race two back under the same conditions. She pressed the pace under a snug hold, shook clear in the stretch but couldn't contain the 3-to-5 favorite in the closing yards. She is today's solo play.

RACE 8 (4:21PM ET) // OPTIONAL CLAIMING // 1 MILE (TURF)

ESPECIALLEA broke his maiden at one mile on the turf, was no match for repeat winner Eamonn (7/2-2-0, $55k) next out, then set the pace and gave way in a grass marathon. PRINCE OF CAPS enters top claim barn off a victory and has the best one-mile turf speed figure to run back to. FERMAT tracked a slow pace two starts back at this level and made up 8-1/4 lengths in the final half mile to finish fourth, far ahead of Especiallea.
