ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2017) – Moonshine Memories left no doubt about who’s sits atop the 2-year-old filly division in Southern California as she romped to an authoritative 2 ¾ length win in Saturday’s Grade I, $300,000 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita. Ridden by Flavien Prat and conditioned by Simon Callaghan, Moonshine Memories got a mile and a sixteenth in 1:46.32 and is now unbeaten in three starts.
Second, a length off favored Alluring Star at the three furlong pole, Moonshine Memories drew even with her rival a quarter mile from home and won easily.
A winner of the Grade I Del Mar Debutante Sept. 2, she was off as the 2-1 second choice in a field of eight juvenile fillies and paid $6.00, $3.20 and $2.60.
Owned by Bridlewood Farm, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael B. Tabor, Moonshine Memories picked up $180,000 for the win, boosting her earnings to $396,000.
Alluring Star, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Joe Talamo, broke from post position two and immediately went to the front while pressured into the first turn by the winner and her stablemate, Just a Smidge. Although she opened up heading down the backstretch, she was in deep water at the top of the lane and was all-out to hold off Piedi Bianchi by a neck for the place.
Off at 9-5, Alluring Star paid $3.20 and $2.40.
Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Piedi Bianchi rallied from off the pace and finished some 9 ¼ lengths in front of Dancing Belle. Off at 7-2, Piedi Bianchi paid $2.60 to show.
Fractions on the race were 23.03, 46.75, 1:12.06 and 1:38.87.
