After making up about 20 lengths in the Kentucky Derby while rallying from last, there was much interest in this Japanese colt heading toward the mile and one-half Belmont Stakes. That clamor nearly came to a complete halt in a single, awkward stride during his May 29 workout over the ‘Big Sandy’ surface. Master Fencer, under hard urging from his exercise rider, lost his action behind and completed the final few yards of his exercise in a manner unpleasing to the eye. It will be critical over the coming days to watch his gallops and see where he stands. International invaders Gronkowski (second in 2018) and Lani (third in 2016) have done well in this race in recent years, the latter also from the Land of the Rising Sun. Jockey Julien Leparoux seeks his first classic victory, but twice has been on the board both in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
