A seventh-place finish in the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth remains the only real blemish on his resume, but it was a costly 2019 return bid for last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile third-place finisher. Signalman rebounded to run third in the Grade 2 Blue Grass at Keeneland, but came up a nose short of earning enough points to join the Kentucky Derby field. Adding injury to insult, he suffered a cut above his eye the week before the Derby that required 7 stitches. Trainer Kenny McPeek finished third in the 2017 Preakness with Senior Investment, a late-running longshot colt like Signalman, who also was making his Triple Crown debut that season.
