Expected to vie for favoritism with War of Will or be a very strong second choice in the wagering, he’s the highest-finishing Kentucky Derby performer still on the trail. Placed third in Louisville, Tacitus can give trainer Bill Mott a second classic victory of 2019 following Country House’s Derby promotion. Mott knows his way around the Belmont Stakes winners’ circle, having traveled it in 2010 with Drosselmeyer. He’s also had a runner-up here (Vision and Verse, 1999), as well as last year’s third-place finisher Hofburg. Pedigree-wise, Tacitus is by 3-time Belmont Stakes-winning sire Tapit and out of Close Hatches, who won the 2013 Mother Goose and 2014 Ogden Phipps over ‘Big Sandy’ at 1-1/16 miles. Jose Ortiz rides the Wood Memorial winner, who will try to capture the Big Apple’s two key spring sophomore events for the first time since Empire Maker swept both in 2003. Ortiz won his first Belmont with Tapwrit in 2017 and was runner-up a year ago with Gronkowski.
