The Preakness winner made amends for his troubled Kentucky Derby trip and comes to New York as the only Grade 1 stakes winner in the Belmont field. That may appear to make him a standout, but note that Afleet Alex (2005) and Tabasco Cat (1994) are the last Preakness-Belmont winners not trained by Bob Baffert. Pairing up such victories hasn’t been easy over the years. And nothing has come easy for War of Will, who battled hind-end soreness after the Louisiana Derby and a rough go on the far turn on the first Saturday in May. Some question sire War Front for his ability to get a winner over a mile and one-half, but the damside often provides the stamina and long-winded damsire Sadler’s Wells serves as a feather in War of Will’s cap. Speed-figure aficionados will cite that he’s never run a particularly fast number and doesn’t lay over the field in that department.
