Legal Transfer entered Miami Valley Racing’s Claim to Fame series championship with a $250,000 bankroll. The 11-year-old pacer added a 36th victory to his resume with a half-length win in 1:54.4 for driver Jeremy Smith and owner-trainer Adam Short, who, coincidentally, claimed Legal Transfer before he won the series opener.
Short didn’t stop there. He claimed The Dark Shadow for $30,000 and watched him spring a 15-to-1 upset in the $37,500 final of his respective division.
Foolish Heart, now in the Virgil Morgan Jr. barn, followed a similar path to win in the pacing final for fillies and mares. She was claimed out of the first leg of the series for $9,600 by Carl Howard and Dana Parham and earned the $8,750 winner’s share in the final.
A total of 18 claims were made on opening day of the month-long series and eight horses changed hands. The finals carried an average purse of $30,000.
In other Claim to Fame action: Danikova (Chris Page) swept through the series unbeaten; Hal N Sammy (Brett Miller) caught favorite Hell On Wheels for a division title; Smash (John DeLong) sprung a 7-1 upset, but Pet Shark (Sam Widger) did one better, scoring at 17-1 despite being parked the mile; and Insomniac trotted to victory for trainer-driver Brad Galliers.
