My horse racing fantasy league held its annual draft this past Monday. Daily Racing Form handicapper Michael Hammersly started this league in 1986. I joined it in 1990 when I also was working for the Racing Form. I have been the league’s commissioner since 2000.
This fantasy league consists of nine members. Each member drafts eight horses. Our league begins each year on Thanksgiving and continues through the final Breeders’ Cup race the following year. Only races in the United States, Canada and on the Dubai World Cup card count. This is how the scoring system works:
--A Grade I race is worth 12, 6 and 4 points for first, second and third.
--A Grade II race is worth 8, 4 and 2 for first, second and third.
--A Grade III race is worth 6, 3 and 1 for first, second and third.
--An ungraded stakes race is worth 4 for first.
--All other races are worth 2 for first.
--All Canadian races are downgraded one level, except the Woodbine Mile, Northern Dancer Turf, Canadian International and E.P. Taylor.
--The most valuable bonus races are the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic (36, 18, 12). The other bonus races (24, 12, 8) are the Apple Blossom, Kentucky Oaks, Met Mile, Beverly D., Arlington Million and all of the other Breeders’ Cup races.
Each league member can make two claims per month along with two “super claims.” When someone makes a claim, they must drop one horse from their stable.
One “super claim,” which is simply an additional claim to the two each month, can be used anytime through the day of the Belmont Stakes. The other “super claim” can be used anytime following the day of the Belmont Stakes.
Racing Form handicapper Byron King won our 2016 fantasy league title and repeated in 2017. King now has won the title in our league a total of four times. No one has won it more times than that.
As for the draft held this past Monday, Bob Baffert led all trainers with 11 horses conditioned by him among the 72 drafted. Chad Brown was next best with nine.
Brown led all trainers for the 2017 draft when 11 of his horses were drafted. Baffert was next best with eight.
Brown also led all trainers for the 2016 draft when nine of his horses were taken. Todd Pletcher was next best with seven, followed by Baffert with five.
The leading sire in the draft this past Monday was Medaglia d’Oro with five horses. They were, in alphabetical order, Bolt d’Oro, Elate, Enticed, Montauk and Wonder Gadot.
Tapit (six horses) was the leading sire for the 2017 draft. Bernardini (six horses) was the leading sire for the 2016 draft.
The order for the draft held this past Monday was determined by the reverse order of this year’s final standings.
Here, in order, are the 72 Thoroughbreds who were drafted Monday (my selections are capitalized):
1. Good Magic. This year’s Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner at Del Mar was the No. 1 pick in the draft. The previous No. 1 picks in the draft since I became commissioner have been General Challenge for 2000, Tiznow for 2001, Monarchos for 2002, Vindication for 2003, Halfbrided for 2004, Ghostzapper for 2005, Stevie Wonderboy for 2006, Discreet Cat for 2007, Curlin for 2008, Zenyatta for 2009, Lookin at Lucky for 2010, Blind Luck for 2011, Havre de Grace for 2012, Wise Dan for 2013, Honor Code for 2014, California Chrome for 2015, Songbird for 2016 and Arrogate for 2017.
2. West Coast. After back-to-back Grade I wins against fellow 3-year-olds in the Travers and Pennsylvania Derby, he finished third vs. older foes in the Grade I BC Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4 (one of our triple bonus races). West Coast is the favorite to be voted a 2017 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male. West Coast is a candidate for the Grade I Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park early in 2018.
3. MCKINZIE. I was elated to get him, though I did also seriously consider taking Bolt d’Oro. But I took McKinzie because I felt he was so impressive in his only start to date. He registered a 5 1/2-length win and recorded a 99 Beyer Speed Figure in a seven-furlong maiden race on Oct. 28 at Santa Anita. McKinzie is scheduled to make his next start in the Grade I Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity on Dec. 9. He is a son of Street Sense, who was a Grade I BC Juvenile winner and Eclipse Award winner at 2 and a Grade I Kentucky Derby winner at 3.
4. Gun Runner. A 2 1/4-length winner of the Grade I BC Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4, he is to make one final start in the Grade I Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream early in 2018 prior to embarking on a stud career. No doubt if he continued racing through 2018, he would have been the No. 1 pick in the draft. He is odds-on to be voted 2017 Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year and champion older male.
5. Diversify. Victorious in the Grade I Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 7 in his most recent start, he entered in Friday’s Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs (5-2 morning-line favorite).
6. Bolt d’Oro. Winner of the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and Santa Anita’s Grade I FrontRunner, he finished third as the 3-5 favorite in the Grade I BC Juvenile on Nov. 4 at Del Mar when he had an extremely wide trip. The first objective for the Medaglia d’Oro colt in 2018 is Santa Anita’s Grade II San Felipe Stakes, followed by scheduled starts in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby and Grade I Kentucky Derby (one of our triple bonus races).
7. Unique Bella. She had a five-race winning streak snapped when seventh as the even-money favorite in the Grade I BC Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 4. In her first workout since the BC Filly & Mare Sprint, she zipped four furlongs in a bullet :46.60 at Santa Anita on Nov. 19. It was the fastest of 60 works at the distance there that morning.
8. Montauk. In his only start so far, he “ran off the TV screen,” as they say. The Medaglia d’Oro colt won a seven-furlong maiden race at Belmont on Oct. 7 by 11 1/4 lengths for trainer Todd Pletcher.
9. Sharp Azteca. Runner-up in the Grade I BC Dirt Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 3, he is ticketed for the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
10. Monomoy Girl. Undefeated in three career starts, she won the Rags to Riches by 6 1/2 lengths at Churchill on Oct. 29 in her dirt debut following a pair of grass victories. She is entered in Saturday’s Grade II Golden Rod at Churchill.
11. Paradise Woods. When last seen under silks, she finished third in the Grade I BC Distaff at Del Mar. She is a candidate for the Grade I La Brea at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. Paradise Woods is best known for her 11 3/4-length win in the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks last April 8, a race in which she broke the record for the biggest margin of victory.
12. Alluring Star. Runner-up in the Grade I BC Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar on Nov. 4, she is expected to make her next start in the Grade I Starlet at Los Alamitos on Dec. 9.
13. Abel Tasman. Runner-up in the Grade I BC Distaff on Nov. 3, she has a very good chance to be voted a 2017 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly. She won this year’s Grade I Kentucky Oaks, Grade I Acorn and Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks.
14. Solomini. Runner-up in the Grade I BC Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 4, he is a candidate for the Grade I Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity on Dec. 9.
15. World Approval. He reeled off consecutive Grade I wins in the Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga, Woodbine Mile and BC Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 4. World Approval likely will be voted a 2017 Eclipse Award as champion male turf horse.
16. COLLECTED. I was very happy to get him with this pick. Winner of the Grade I Pacific Classic at Del Mar (one of our bonus races), he finished second in the BC Classic (one of our triple bonus races) on that same track Nov. 4. He is a candidate for the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream early in 2018.
17. Practical Joke. Winner of the H. Allen Jerkens at Saratoga on Aug. 26, he finished fourth in the BC Dirt Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 3. He is scheduled to make the final start of his career in the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
18. Fly So High. She ran third in a six-furlong maiden race Oct. 8 at Belmont in her career debut, then won a one-mile maiden affair by 7 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct when racing with Lasix for the first time on Nov. 16. She is a candidate for the Grade II Demoiselle at the Big A on Dec. 2.
19. Daddys Lil Darling. Runner-up in the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland on Oct. 14, she is entered in Friday’s Grade II Mrs. Revere at Churchill (7-5 morning-line favorite).
20. Sharp Samurai. Trainer Mark Glatt has had a very good year. This is the first one of his trainees taken in any of our drafts. Sharp Samurai will be seeking his fifth straight win in Saturday’s Grade I Hollywood Derby at Del Mar. He goes into the Hollywood Derby off back-to-back Grade II victories in the Del Mar Derby and Santa Anita’s Twilight Derby.
21. FAITHFULLY. Second in the Grade I Zenyatta on Sept. 30 when last seen in action, she is entered in Thursday’s Grade II Falls City Handicap at Churchill (even-money favorite on the morning line).
22. Avery Island. Winner of the Grade II Nashua at Aqueduct on Nov. 5, he is a candidate for the Grade II Remsen at the Big A on Dec. 2.
23. It Tiz Well. Winner of the Grade I Cotillion at Parx on Sept. 23, she is a candidate for the Grade II Bayakoa at Los Alamitos on Dec. 3.
24. Cambodia. Victorious in a pair of Grade II races (Yellow Ribbon Handicap and John C. Mabee) on the grass at Del Mar during the summer, she finished third in the Grade I BC Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 4. She is to run in Sunday’s Grade I Matriarch at Del Mar.
25. Elate. Winner of the Grade I Alabama and Grade I Beldame, she finished fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade I BC Distaff on Nov. 3 at Del Mar.
26. Hawksmoor. Runner-up in the Grade I First Lady at Keeneland on Oct. 7, she is to run in Sunday’s Grade I Matriarch at Del Mar.
27. Roy H. Winner of the Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship and Grade I BC Sprint at Del Mar, he is a heavy favorite to be voted a 2017 Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter.
28. Beach Patrol. He won the Grade I Arlington Million (one of our bonus races) and Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic before finishing second in the BC Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 4.
29. Mind Your Biscuits. Third in the Grade I BC Sprint on Nov. 4, he is a candidate for the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
30. Mo Town. After winning two of his first seven career starts, all on dirt, he showed dramatic improvement when switch to the turf in an Oct. 12 allowance/optional claiming contest at Belmont. He won that Oct. 12 race by 6 1/2 lengths. Mo Town is entered in Saturday’s Grade I Hollywood Derby at Del Mar.
31. Caledonia Road. She won the Grade I BC Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar on Nov. 4 by 3 1/4 lengths at 17-1.
32. Kitten’s Roar. Runner-up in the Grade I E.P. Taylor at Woodbine on Oct. 15, she won the Grade II Goldikova by 2 1/4 lengths at Del Mar on Nov. 4. She is to run in Sunday’s Grade I Matriarch at Del Mar.
33. Forever Unbridled. She has made just three starts this year, but she won them all. She was victorious in the Grade II Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill on June 17 in her 2017 debut. That was followed by Grade I triumphs in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga on Aug. 26 and BC Distaff at Del Mar on Nov. 3. Forever Unbridled is a candidate for the Grade I Pegasus at Gulfstream early in 2018.
34. OFF LIMITS. She has won three in a row, with two of those victories coming in Grade III races at Belmont (Noble Dansel, Athenia). She is to run in Sunday’s Grade I Matriarch at Del Mar.
35. Hoppertunity. Runner-up in the Comma to the Top at Santa Anita on Oct. 28, he is entered in Friday’s Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill (3-1 second favorite on the morning line). He won the Clark in 2014.
36. Greyvitos. After losing his first two career starts, he earned his maiden diploma in the Grade III Bob Hope at Del Mar on Nov. 11 when 19-1. The Bob Hope was his first race with blinkers.
37. Analyze It. In his only start thus far, he was quite impressive when victorious by 6 1/4 lengths in a one-mile maiden race on the grass Oct. 28 at Belmont for trainer Chad Brown.
38. Edwards Going Left. He won Del Mar’s Cary Grant against California-breds last Sunday. It was his sixth victory of 2017. He is a candidate for Santa Anita’s Grade I Malibu on Dec. 26.
39. MUBTAAHIJ. Winner of the Grade I Awesome Again at Santa Anita on Sept. 30, he finished eighth in the Grade I BC Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4. He is entered in Saturday’s Grade III Native Diver at Del Mar.
40. Untamed Domain. Runner-up in the Grade I BC Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3, he has designs on the Grade II Holy Bull at Gulfstream early in 2018. All of his starts so far have come on the grass. The Holy Bull is contested on dirt.
41. Om. Eighth in the Grade I BC Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 4, he is to run in Sunday’s Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar.
42. Catholic Boy. Fourth in the Grade I BC Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3, he is a candidate for the Grade II Remsen at Aqueduct on Dec. 2. All of his races to date have come on the turf. The Remsen would be his first start on the dirt.
43. Quip. Undefeated in two career starts, he is entered in Saturday’s Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill.
44. Wonder Gadot. Sixth in the BC Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar on Nov. 4, she is a candidate for the Grade II Demoiselle at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
45. Daisy. She’s two for two. She splashed her way to an eight-length maiden win on a sloppy track Oct. 9 at Parx, then won the Grade III Tempted by 4 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct on Nov. 3.
46. Top of the Game. Winner of Santa Anita’s Comma to the Top on Oct. 28, he is entered in Saturday’s Grade III Native Diver at Del Mar.
47. Rubilinda. Victorious in Belmont’s Christiecat on Sept. 8 and Pebbles on Oct. 14, she is to run in Sunday’s Grade I Matriarch at Del Mar.
48. Enticed. Third in the Grade I Champagne at Belmont on Oct. 7, he is entered in Saturday’s Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill.
49. Jamyson ’n Ginger. She is two for two in New York since Chad Brown has taken over the training duties from Rudy Rodriguez.
50. Chicago Style. Fifth in Santa Anita’s Grade II John Henry Turf Championship on Oct. 1, he is entered in Friday’s Grade II Hollywood Turf Cup (7-2 second choice on the morning line).
51. Shaman Ghost. He is back in training following a throat procedure that he underwent after finishing second as a 1-2 favorite in the Grade II Suburban at Belmont on July 8, his most recent start. He won the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap earlier this year on March 11.
52. PAVEL. I was quite pleased to get him at this point in the draft. Yes, he finished 10th in the BC Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4. But I believe it was remarkable that, with just three races under his belt, the 3-year-old colt finished third in Belmont’s Jockey Club Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles on Oct. 7, a race he lost by only 1 3/4 lengths. He is a candidate for Santa Anita’s Grade I Malibu on Dec. 26.
53. Rushing Fall. She has won all three of her starts this year, highlighted by her victory in the Grade I BC Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3.
54. Neolithic. Runner-up in the Grade II Fayette at Keeneland on Oct. 28, he is a candidate for the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
55. Honorable Duty. He won the Grade III Lukas Classic at Churchill on Sept. 30, then finished sixth as the 7-5 favorite on a sloppy track in the Grade II Fayette at Keeneland on Oct. 28. Honorable Duty is entered in Friday’s Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill (5-1 morning line).
56. Cool Bobby. Narrowly beaten in his career debut Oct. 9 at Santa Anita, he won a six-furlong maiden race at Del Mar on Nov. 11.
57. THE PLAYER. Winner of the Grade II Fayette in the slop at Keeneland on Oct. 28, he is entered in Friday’s Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill (6-1 morning line).
58. Tiz Mischief. A maiden winner in a 1 1/16-mile race Oct. 7 at Keeneland in his third career start, he is entered in Saturday’s Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill.
59. Seymourdini. Entered in Thursday’s Grade III Fall Highweight Handicap at Aqueduct, he will be withdrawn from that race and run instead in the Grade I Cigar Mile at the Big A on Dec. 2, according to the Racing Form’s David Grening. Seymourdini finished fourth in the Grade III Bold Ruler Handicap on Oct. 28 at Belmont when, in a rather strange performance, he dropped all the way back to last in the field of nine before rallying belatedly in the final furlong to lose by 1 3/4 lengths.
60. Beasley. Third in the Grade III Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont on Oct. 28, he is a candidate for the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
61. Money’soncharlotte. Runner-up in the Grade II Chilukki at Churchill on Nov. 4, she is entered in Thursday’s Grade II Falls City Handicap at that same track (3-1 second favorite on the morning line).
62. Good Samaritan. He is entered in Friday’s Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill (8-1 morning line). Winner of the Grade II Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 29, he ran fifth as the 7-2 favorite in the Grade I Travers there on Aug. 26 and fourth in the Grade I Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont on Oct. 7.
63. Stalwalkin’ Dude. Runner-up in the Grade III Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont on Oct. 28, he is entered in Thursday’s Grade III Fall Highweight Handicap at Aqueduct (2-1 morning-line favorite).
64. Daddy Is a Legend. Winner of a 1 1/8-mile maiden race on the grass Oct. 27 at Keeneland in her third career start, she is entered in Saturday’s Grade III Jimmy Durante at Del Mar.
65. Miss Sky Warrior. Fourth as the 3-5 favorite in the Grade III Turnback the Alarm Handicap at Belmont on Oct. 28, she is entered in Friday’s Grade III Comely at Aqueduct (5-2 second choice on the morning line).
66. Sultry. Winner of the Spendthrift Juvenile Filly Stallion Stakes at Churchill on Oct. 29, she is entered in Saturday’s Grade II Golden Rod at Churchill.
67. Phoenix Fire. A $1.25 million auction purchase in 2016, he is training at Santa Anita in preparation for his career debut. Bob Baffert trains the 2-year-old Tapit colt.
68. Irish Freedom. Third as the 6-5 favorite in the Comma to the Top at Santa Anita on Oct. 28, he is entered in Saturday’s Grade III Native Diver at Del Mar.
69. Lady Eli. She finished seventh after a troubled trip as the 3-2 favorite in the Grade I BC Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 4. Lady Eli emerged from the race with a number of nasty cuts on her hind legs. She was to have been sold at public auction after that race, but was withdrawn from the sale. It had been announced that this year’s BC Filly & Mare Turf would be Lady Eli’s final career start, but she was the 69th pick in the draft just in case it turns out her racing career is not yet over.
70. MR HAVERCAMP. He’s won four of five career starts. In his only defeat, he had a troubled trip and finished fifth in the Grade III Saranac at Saratoga on Sept. 2. The Racing Form’s Jay Privman wrote on Nov. 16: “Those likely for the 1 1/8-mile [Hollywood] Derby include Big Score, Bowies Hero, Channel Maker, Harbour Master, Just Howard, Kencumin, Mo Town, Mr Havercamp, Sharp Samurai and Van Cortland.” Mr Havercamp intrigued me to such an extent that I went ahead and took him with the 70th pick in the draft. But I was disappointed when Mr Havercamp wasn’t one of the nine 3-year-olds entered in Saturday’s Hollywood Derby at Del Mar.
71. Cicatrix. In her only start to date, the 2-year-old Violence filly won a six-furlong maiden race at Churchill by 7 1/4 lengths on Nov. 16 for trainer Ian Wilkes.
72. New York Hero. A nine-length winner in a one-mile maiden race against New York-breds on Oct. 18 in his second career start, he is a candidate for the Grade II Remsen at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
